英语的倍数问题~

英语倍数的翻译似乎是一个老生常谈的问题,但如何准确地翻译英语倍数一直存在着争议.英语表示倍数增减或倍数对比的句型多种多样,其中有一些句型很容易译错,这是因为在英文和中文的表达中,两种语言的表达思维是不一样的,存在着差异和区别.只有懂得了这些思维方式的差异和区别,才能正确地掌握好英语倍数的翻译.用英语表达“A 是 B 的 N 倍”,“A 比 B 大N 倍” 或“A 比B 小 N 分之几”等,可用下列几种句型：
1． 倍数增加（1） A is N times as great as B.A is N times greater than B. A is N times the size of B.
以上三句都应译为：A的大小是B的N倍（或A比B大N－1倍）.注：当相比的对象B很明显时,than（as,of）B常被省去.（2）increase to N times
increase N times／N-fold
increase by N times
increase by a factor of N以上四句均应译为：增加到N倍（或：增加N－1倍）. 注：在这类句型中increase常被raise,grow,go/step up,multiply等词所替代.
（3）There is a N-fold/N times increase/growth…应译为：增加N－1倍（或增至N倍）.
……在所有这些句型中,争议最大的大概是这样的句子： A is three times greater than B.
这个句子虽然简单,但争议颇多,可能是英语倍数翻译中争议最大的一个,即使在英语工具书和其他有关英语翻译的书上,也是两种译法.有的学者认为应该译为“A比B大3倍（A是B的4倍）”,也有的学者有不同的译法,认为应该译作“A比B大2倍（A是B的3倍）”,似乎没有定论.而在我所查阅过的所有英语词典（包括英汉词典和英英词典）中都没有发现对这一句型的说明和解释,也就是说,几乎所有词典都回避了这个问题,可见争议之大.十多年前,我曾就此问题查阅过许多英语语法书籍,但绝大多数语法书也都同样回避了这个句型,不置可否.只有很少的语法书提到了这个句型,但却是两种解释都有,没有定论.而且大都用词含糊,似乎连自己也不太自信.也就是说,对于这个句型,我至今没有找到一本书,能够对之予以坚定且具有说服力的说明和解释.我也曾请教过许多外国学者,外国学者中也同样存在着两种看法,有人说A是B的3倍,也有人说A是B的4倍.如果再追问他们一句“肯定吗”,则大部分外国朋友也都含糊其词,不能坚定自己的看法.

=This bridge is three times width of that one.（这座桥的宽度是那座桥的三倍.）
不是说了吗,这个现在还很是个争议的问题,以上三个例子你记住就行了

1. “… times ＋形容词 / 副词的比较级＋ than …”例如： Line AB is three times longer than line CD. 线段 AB 是（线段） CD 的三倍长。 This hall is five times bigger than our classroom. 这个大厅比我们的教室大 5 倍。 2. “… times +as + 形容词 / 副词的原级＋ as …”例如： This table is three times as long as that one. 这张桌子是那张桌子的三倍长。 This dictionary is five times as thick as the one you borrowed from the library. 这本词典的厚度是你从图书馆借的那本（厚度）的 5 倍。 3. “… times + the + 名词（如： size， height， weight， length， width 等）＋ of …”例如： The earth is 49 times the size of the moon. 地球的体积是月球的 49 倍。 This river is three times the depth of that one. 这条河是那条河的三倍深。 4. “… times + more ＋名词＋ than …”例如： He earns five times more money than he did ten years ago. 他现在挣的钱比十年前挣的多 5 倍。 There are twice more students in our class than in theirs. 我们班的学生人数比他们班多两倍。 5. “… times +as many （或 much ）＋名词＋ as …”例如： We've produced twice as much cotton this year as （ we did ） ten years ago. 今年我们生产的棉花比十年前多了一倍。（汉语中的多一倍实际上也指两倍一样多。） He has got three times as many books as his sister. 他拥有的书的数量是他妹妹的 3 倍。 6. “… times + what 从句”例如： The length of the road is four times what it was three years ago. 这条路的长度是三年前的 4 倍。 The price of the meat is twice what it was last year. 肉价是去年的两倍。 7. “… times + up on （或 over ）…”例如： The size of the sun is a million times over that of the earth. 太阳的体积比地球的体积大一百万倍。 He is three times up on your age. 他的年龄是你的 4 倍（或：比你的年龄大 3 倍）。 8. “… +by + … times ”例如： Compared with last year， our coal output has increased by three times. 与去年相比，我们的煤产量增长了 3 倍。 His speed is faster than mine by four times. 他的速度比我的快 4 倍。 9. “… times + compared with ＋被比较对象”例如： The number of the students in our school has increased for times compared with 1980. 我们学校的学生人数比 1980 年增加了 3 倍。 10. “… times + that of + 被比较对象”例如： In this workshop the output of July was 3.5 times that of January. 这个车间七月份的产量是元月份的 3.5 倍。 二二二二、、、、用分数用分数用分数用分数、、、、百分数表示倍数百分数表示倍数百分数表示倍数百分数表示倍数。。。。例如例如例如例如：：：： The box is one-third bigger than that one. 这个盒子比那个盒子大三分之一。 Last year the output value of industry was 59 percent higher than that of 1976. 去年工业产值比 1976 年增长了 59 ％。 My command of English is not half so good as yours. 我英语掌握得还不及你的一半儿好。 三三三三、、、、用用用用 again （（（（一倍一倍一倍一倍），），），）， double （（（（两倍两倍两倍两倍），），），）， triple （（（（三倍三倍三倍三倍），），），）， fourfold （（（（四倍四倍四倍四倍））））等词表示倍数等词表示倍数等词表示倍数等词表示倍数。 例如： My Aunt is as old again as I am. 我姑姑的年龄比我大一倍。 The top-brand clothes are often sold as double the normal price here. 这里名牌衣服的售价经常比正常的售价高一倍。 The new work procedure tripled the output. 新工艺使产量增加两倍。 The output of grain increased fourfold. 粮食产量增加了三倍。

英语倍数句型及其译法

英语表示倍数增减或倍数对比的句型多种多样，其中有一些（如下文中的句型②、⑤、⑥、⑧、（12） 等，见圈码）很容易译错——其主要原因在于：英汉两语在表述或对比倍数方面存在着语言与思维差异。现将常用的英语倍数句型及其正确译法归纳如下：

1．倍数增加
（1）A is n times as great（long，much，…）as B.（①）
A is n times greater （longer， more，…）than B.（②）
A is n times the size （length， amount，…）of B.(③)
以上三句都应译为；A的大小（长度，数量，……）是B的n倍[或A比日大（长，多，……）n-1倍]. 例如：
This book is three times as long as （three times longer than，three times the length of ）that one，
这本书的篇幅是那本书的3倍（即长两倍）。
注：当相比的对象B很明显时，than（as，of）B常被省去。
（2）increase to n times（④）
increase n times／n-fold（⑤）
increase by n times（⑥）
increase by a factor of n（⑦）
以上四式均应译为：增加到n倍（或：增加n-1倍）。例如：
The production of integrated circuits has been increased to three times as compared with last year。
集成电路的产量比去年增加了两倍。
The output of chemical fertilizer has been raised five times as against l986．化肥产量比1986年增加了4倍。
That can increase metabolic rates by two or three times。
那可使代谢率提高到原来的2倍或3倍（即提高1倍或2倍）。
The drain voltage has been increased by a factor of four.
漏电压增加了3借（即增加到原来的4倍）。
注：在这类句型中increase常被raise，grow，go/step up，multiply等词所替代。
（3）There is a n-fold increase/growth…应译为：增加n-倍（或增至n倍）。（⑧）这个句型还有其它一些形式，如：
A record high increase in value of four times was reported.
据报道,价值破记录地增长了3倍。
（4）double【增加1倍】，treble（增加2倍），quadruple（增加3倍）。(⑨)例如：
The efficiency of the machines has been more than trebled or quadrupled．这些机器的效率已提高了2倍或3倍多。
(5)此外，英语中还有一种用again而不用倍数词来比较倍数的方法，如：
A is as much （large，long，…）again as B.【= A is twice as much （large，long，…）as B.】（⑩）应译为：A比B多（大，长，……）1倍。
A is half as much （large， 1ong，…）again as B.【= A is one and a half times as much （large， 1ong，…）as B.】（11）
应译为:A比B多（大，长……）一半（即A是B的一倍半）。

2、倍数减少
（1）A is n times as small （light，slow，…）as B.（12）
A is n times smaller （lighter， slower，…）than B.（13）
以上两句均应译为：A的大小（重量，速度，……）是B的1/n[或A比B小（轻，慢，……）（n-1）/n]。例如：
The hydrogen atom is near1y l6 times as light as the oxygen atom.氢原子的重量约为氧原子的1/16（即比氧原子约轻15／16）。
This sort of membrane is twice thinner than ordinary paper.
这种薄膜比普通纸张要薄一半（即是普通纸厚度的1／2）。
注：当相比的对象B很明显时，than/as B常被省去。
（2）decrease n times／n一fold （14）
decrease by n times（15）
decrease by a factor of n（16）
以上三式均译为：减少到1／n[或：减少（n-1）／n]。decrease常被reduce， shorten， go／slow down等词替代。例如：
Switching time of the new-type transistor is shortened 3 times。新型晶体管的开关时间缩短了1／3（即缩短到2／3）。
When the voltage is stepped up by ten times， the strength of the current is stepped down by ten times。电压升高9倍，电流强度便降低9／10（即90％）。
The equipment reduced the error probability by a factor of 5.
该设备误差概率降低了4/5。
（3）There is a n-fold decrease／reduction…应译为：减至1／n
[或：减少（n一1）／n]。（17）这个句型还有其它一些形式，如：
A rapid decrease by a factor of 7 was observed．发现迅速减少到1／7。
The principal advantage of the products is a two-fold reduction in weight；这些产品的主要优点是重量减轻了1／2。
从上列倍数增减句型及其译法中不难看出：与汉语不同的是，英语在表述或比较倍数时，无论使用什么句型（除了不含倍数词的again句型外）都包括基础倍数在内，因此都不是净增或净减n倍，而是净增或净减n-1倍。所以句型⑤、③表示的倍数增量=句型④；句型(13)表示的倍数比差＝句型12，且decrease（by） 3 times应译为“减少2／3”，而不是“减少3／4”。
补充几个数量的表达方法

Twenty odd = twenty and odd 二十多

因为如果你说A是B的三倍，那么就是A比B大两倍，举个例

第一种：倍数+as+形容词+as

height等长宽高的名词形式）+of

by 是被,由的意思
也就是第一题是说被曾经了N倍
