译文：
苗傅、刘正彦作乱时，魏公张浚在浙江嘉兴，商讨举兵以清王室之患。一天晚间独坐之时，随从都睡了，忽见一人拿着刀站在烛架之后。张知是刺客，从容不迫地问：“莫非苗、刘二人派你来杀我么？”回答：“是的！”张说：“要是这样，把我的脑袋拿去吧！” 那人说：“我也读过书，岂肯给贼人效力？况且我公如此忠义，怎忍下手？只怕我公防卫不严，还有陆续派来的人，所以来通知一声。”张问：“想得到金银绢帛么？”他笑了笑说：“杀掉我公，还愁没有钱？”张又问：“那么留下来当差行么？”他回答：“我还有老娘在河北，不可留。”问他的姓名，低着头不出声，撩衣一跃上房，瓦片没一点响动。当时月白如昼，他飞一样的消逝了。明天，魏公取出死囚一名斩首，说；“这是夜间捉到的奸细。”魏公后来常常到河北去打听，始终不见此人。这又比刺赵盾的鉏麑强多了！谁说世上没有奇男子呢？大概是唐代剑客之流吧！

原注：鉏麑：春秋时晋国力士，晋灵公恨大臣赵盾多次进谏，派其行刺。清晨前往，见盾盛服将朝，坐而假寐，不忍下后，退而触槐自杀。事见《左传 宣公二年》。
按本篇实有其事，《宋史 张浚传》：“初，浚次秀州，尝夜坐，警备甚严，忽有客至前，出一纸怀中曰：‘此苗傅、刘正彦募贼公赏格也。’浚问欲何如？客曰：‘仆，河北人，粗读书，知逆顺，岂以身为贼用？特见为备不严，恐有后来者耳。’浚下，执其手，问姓名，不告而去。浚翌日斩死囚徇于众曰：‘此苗、刘刺客也。’私识其状貌物色之，终不遇。”
建炎三年（1129年）二月，金人攻扬州，高宗仓皇渡江出逃，大将王渊与内侍康履护驾至镇江。奉国军节度使刘光世未赶上护驾，怕高宗怪罪于他，便在驾前哭泣诬告王渊专管江上海船，不给他所部兵马渡江。渊一气之下，斩江北都巡检皇甫佐以自解。自此，渊失众将心。统制官苗傅自负世代为将，因渊被重用，嫉妒不服。时，宦官康履专权，与渊关系甚密，及渊入枢密府，傅等疑其由康履推荐，由此更怀恨在心，便暗中与威州刺史刘正彦密谋，以除宦官为名，设伏兵于城北桥下，待渊退朝，一拥而上，将其擒拿，诬以勾结宦官谋反，先斩渊，后杀康履等宦官百余人。逼高宗退位，拥立先皇幼子赵旉为帝，改元明受，隆佑太后垂帘听政。苗、刘二人以为妇人孺子执政，可以为所欲为。苗傅、刘正彦发动的这场叛乱，史称“苗刘之乱”。
在这次叛乱中，在秀州拥有重兵的韩世忠的儿子以及夫人梁红玉也被叛军扣压。但韩世忠善于用兵，作战勇敢，威名素著，苗傅等人对他颇为忌惮，对梁红玉母子颇为客气。
叛乱发生之后，宋高宗的行动已是毫无自由，宰相朱胜非与隆裕太后密商，派梁红玉出城，驰往秀州，催促韩世忠火速进兵杭州勤王，并由太后封梁红玉为安国夫人，封韩世忠为御营平寇左将军。这里商量妥当，朱胜非就对苗傅说：“韩世忠听到事变后，不立即前来，说明他正在犹豫，举棋不定，如果你能派他的妻子前往迎接，劝韩世忠投奔你，那么你力量大增，别的人就用不着惧怕了。”苗傅听后大喜，认为是一条好计，立即派梁红玉出城，梁红玉回家抱了儿子，跨上马背，疾驰而去，一昼夜赶到秀州。韩世忠在了解了一切情况后，当即会同张浚、刘光世，带兵平定了苗傅等人的叛乱。苗傅、刘正彦被生擒，后被凌迟处死。高宗复位后，下令为王渊等人平反，追赠王渊开府仪同三司，累加少保，并升任韩世忠为武胜军节度使，不久又拜为江浙制置使。
