一次偶然的机会，她慕名来到了语言治疗师莱纳尔罗格 (杰弗里:拉什饰)的宅邸，传说他的方式与众不同。虽然公爵对罗格稀奇古怪的招法并不感兴趣，首次诊疗也不欢而散。
但是，公爵发现在聆听音乐时自己朗读莎翁竟然十分流利。这让他开始信任罗格，配合治疗，慢慢克服着心理的障碍。
乔治五世驾崩，爱德华八世继承王位，却为了迎娶寡妇辛普森夫人不惜退位。艾伯特临危受命，成为了乔治六世。他面临的最大挑战就是如何在二战前发表鼓舞人心的演讲。

这部讲述伊丽莎白二世的父亲乔治六世国王生平的传记电影，在开拍伊始就被看好成为2011年各大奖项的种子选手，因为它不仅有着和历史紧贴的时代背景，更有着科林·费斯、杰弗里·拉什、海伦娜·伯翰·卡特等好戏之人的精彩演绎。
对于这部电影的“奖项野心”，该片制作人马克·福利尼奥表示，《国王的演讲》是一个会唤起大家重温历史的故事，这部电影的前期准备工作非常地复杂和细致，‘这部电影有着精彩的故事和演员的出色演绎，大家都是非常认真地在做一部值得被观众记住的电影，为这个目标在努力。
编剧大卫·塞德勒跟片中的乔治六世一样，曾经也是口吃病患者，他小时候就读过乔治六世的故事。大卫表示，乔治六世的故事对他有很大鼓励，最后他也克服了口吃问题，所以长大后一直想把这个故事搬上银幕。
虽然大卫对这段历史研究颇深，但由于缺少一手材料，剧本初稿很大部分要靠想象来填充细节。后来他找到曾获罗格医生治疗的一位叔叔，对罗格的治疗手法有了详尽了解。
影片开拍前9周，他得到了罗格医生的笔记本，从而对当时发生的事件有了更真实的了解，不少记载的内容都直接引用到了电影之中，也使得影片生动性大增。
