出处：唐·元稹《离思五首·其四》。全诗：“曾经沧海难为水，除却巫山不是云。取次花丛懒回顾，半缘修道半缘君。”

“曾经沧海难为水，除却巫山不是云。”这句话的意思：经历过无比深广的沧海的人，别处的水再难以吸引他；除了云蒸霞蔚的巫山之云，别处的云都黯然失色。
曾经：曾经历过。曾，副词。经，经历。
沧海：古人通称渤海为沧海。
除却：除了。
原诗以沧海之水和巫山之云隐喻爱情之深广笃厚，见过大海、巫山，别处的水和云就难以看上眼了，除了诗人所念、钟爱的女子，再也没有能使我动情的女子了。诗人的这个“心上人”，据说是双文，即诗人所写传奇《莺莺传》中的莺莺，诗人因双文出身寒门而抛弃她后，有八九年“不向花回顾”（《梦游春七十韵》）。又有人说紫诗是为悼念亡妻韦丛而作，韦丛出身高门，美丽贤慧，27岁早逝后，诗人曾表示誓不再娶（《遣悲怀·之三》）。两句诗化用典故，取譬极高。前句典出《孟子·尽心上》“观于海者难为水”；后句典出宋玉《高唐赋序》“姜在巫山之阳，高丘之阻，旦为朝云，暮为行雨。后人引用这两句诗，多喻指对爱情的忠诚，说明非伊莫属、爱不另与。这两句诗还简缩为成语“曾经沧海”，还可比喻曾经经历过很大的场面，眼界开阔，见多识广，对比较平常的事物不放在眼里。

"曾经沧海难为水"，对我而言则是：曾读此诗难为诗。它把人对某种生死之恋的刻骨铭心写绝了。
沧海之后，再无水了，那该怎麼办呢?人总不能在无水的海岸上坐以待毙吧。
或许有两种可能。
要麼在记忆之海裏继续沉浸，在往事裏打捞珠贝，打捞沉落的星光月光，直到那昔年的沧海也将自己渐渐淹没。
要麼在生存之岸上重新开掘深井，以新的水源浇灌生存的荒漠，或许，当井水映照出汲水人的倒影，也会令他想起被沧海收藏的那些日日夜夜?
生命的水域就这样得以延续。
而记忆裏波光重叠著波光，倒影重叠著倒影，使人生有了繁复的层次和密度。
爱的体验是如此，人生的其他体验是否也是如此?
读了一本十分感人的好书，你真的不想再读那些没有灵魂的轻薄之书了。
登五岳饱览山水之胜，你内心裏满是奇峰深谷，你还想再看那些被众人的鞋踩踏得不成样子、毫无野性和灵气的商业之山吗?……
爱情、读书、揽胜、交往……都会有近似的体验。
沧海，太浩瀚、太深邃、太苦涩；沧海，几乎就是无限"，就是生命与情感的极境。
所以，大部分人并未到过沧海，更没有到达沧海深处。
顶多只是远远地想像过沧海：可能是很大很深吧?
或者站在海边看了一眼大海：果然是很大很深的。
或者在退潮的海滩上拾几枚贝壳。
没有真正经历过沧海，所以，对水就不挑剔：咸水是水，淡水也是水，深水是水，浅水也是水，清水是水，浊水也是水。
曾经沧海，再也见不到水，是圣者的苦爱。
未经沧海，到处都是水，是凡人的福气。
"曾经沧海难为水"，我又觉得，曾经到过沧海深处，记忆裏灌满海水的人，当他上岸，当他回过头来，会不会看见那一汪不显眼的、清清淡淡的泉水?或许清淡清澈的泉水，也能让他领略到另一种仁慈，另一种福气?使他陷於绝境的人生获得拯救?
何况，"除却巫山不是云"，也是可以再商量的，巫山上的云是最纯洁美丽的，而且有著神话的色彩，倘若把所有的山都看做神山，那麼每一座山上升起的云都是神话的云，美丽的云，她们缭绕著孤独的山峰，填补并装饰了天空的巨大空虚，而且，借助风和气流的酝酿，她们会降下雨，降下雪--
雨和雪会化做天下的好水。
正是：
曾经沧海仍有水，
除却巫山也是云。
