科学家李比希提出了另外一种更好的方法。在玻璃上浇上一种特殊的溶液，这种溶液里会有银沉淀出来、银慢慢沉淀在玻璃上，半个小时光景，玻璃上就涂上了一层发亮的薄膜。为了保护这层薄膜，在上面再涂上一层漆。
这个方法所以比较好，就在于可以避免和有毒的水银打交道。而且制成的镜子也更亮。
如果把一面涂银的镜子和一面涂水银的镜子并排摆着，一眼就可以看出那涂水银的镜子要暗得多。一只25瓦的电灯，在涂水银的镜子里看去好像只有16瓦，在它上面失掉的光就有这么多。
制造镜子看起来好像不是什么很奥妙的事，可是在300年前，能制镜子的只有一个城市——威尼斯；威尼斯人把制造镜子的方法保守秘密。谁要是胆敢把制造镜子的秘密泄露给外国人，就要被处死刑。根据威尼斯政府的命令，所有的玻璃工厂都要搬到姆拉诺孤岛上去，外国人不准到那里去。
有一个时期，这个岛上有40个大工厂，有几千工人在这些工厂里做工。仅一个法国，每年就要去200箱镜子。这里制造的不只是镜子，还有用无色的和彩色的玻璃制造的各种各样器皿，都是名闻全球的。威尼斯酒杯和花瓶制作的精巧尤其令人惊异。很难相信所有这些错综复杂的花瓣、叶片和茎干都是用这样脆的材料制成的。
姆拉诺岛上的熟练工匠在威尼斯里受到极大的尊敬。玻璃工匠称号的光荣不比贵族称号差。管理这个岛的议会就是由玻璃工匠自己选举出来的。所有威尼斯人都惧怕的警察却没有权力来管姆拉诺的居民。
这些玻璃工匠的自由只有一样受到限制：用死刑威胁来禁止他们到外国去。不仅用死刑威胁逃亡者，还威胁他们留在国内的家属。尽管这样，威尼斯人还是没有能够保守住他们的秘密。

那一晚，有一只有篷的平底船停在法国大使馆旁边，法国大使馆的房屋像所有威尼斯的房屋一样，是坐落在运河边上的。从平底船里出来一个矮壮的汉子，裹在一件黑斗篷里，进了大使馆。过了几小时，他又出来回到船上。

可是柯尔柏也没有在睡大觉。
他想尽各种办法把威尼斯人留在自己这里。就差一点就要请他们住到王宫里去了。他给他们大笔的钱。满足他们所有的怪诞的欲望，帮助他们受到死刑威胁的家属逃出威尼斯。威尼斯政府要追捕那些“犯罪的玻璃工匠”的妻儿。可是他们也连影都不见了。
基斯丁尼亚尼答应那些留下来的威尼斯人不治他们的罪。还给每人5000杜克脱，可是也不成。他们不愿意离开巴黎，他们在巴黎过得很美好。那些逃亡者已经把那条要处死他们的法律忘得干干净净了。
1667年1月，在他们到法国以后一年半。一个最好的工匠突然死了。过了3星期，另一个特别擅长吹镜玻璃的工匠又死了。医生断定说，是中毒死的。差不多就在这一时候，威尼斯有两个玻璃工匠试图逃到法国，被逮捕入狱并且处死了。
