But, cold and dark as it was, a poor little girl, with bare head and feet, was still wandering about the streets. When she left her home she had slippers on, but they were much too large for her； indeed, properly, they belonged to her mother, and had dropped off her feet whilst she was running very fast across the road, to get out of the way of two carriages. One of the slippers was not to be found, the other had been snatched up by a little boy, who ran off with it thinking it might serve him as a doll's cradle.

So the little girl now walked on, her bare feet quite red and blue with the cold. She carried a small bundle of matches in her hand, and a good many more in her tattered apron. No one had bought any of them the live long day； no one had given her a single penny. Trembling with cold and hunger crept she on, the picture of sorrow: poor little child

The snow-flakes fell on her long, fair hair, which curled in such pretty ringlets over her shoulders； but she thought not of her own beauty, or of the cold. Lights were glimmering through every window, and the savor of roast goose reached her from several houses； it was New Year's eve, and it was of this that she thought.

Her hands were nearly dead with cold； one little match from her bundle would warm them. Perhaps, if she dared light it, she drew one out, and struck it against the wall, bravo! it was a bright, warm flame, and she held her hands over it. It was quite an illumination for that poor little girl； nay,1 call it rather a magic taper, for it seemed to her as though she was sitting before a large iron-stove with brass ornaments, so beautifully blazed the fire within! The child stretched out her feet to warm them also； alas, in an instant the flame had died away, the stove vanished, the little girl sat cold and comfortless, with the burnt match in her hand.

街边一前一后坐落着两座房子，形成一个小墙角，她蹲在墙角里，把一双小脚卷缩到身下坐了下来，可是没有用，她还是不觉得暖和。她不敢回家，因为她还没有卖掉一根火柴，没有挣到一个铜板，她的父亲也许会因此打她，况且她家几乎和大街上一样冷。那是一间阁楼，虽然屋顶上几个较大的裂口用草和破布堵住了，可风和雪还是不时地灌进来，她那双小手差不多冻僵了。她想，只要她敢抽出一根火柴，在墙上擦燃，就可以暖手，终于她抽出了一根。哧！火柴燃起来了，冒出了火苗。当她双手覆在上面时，它变成了一朵光明、温暖的火焰，象一根奇妙的小蜡烛。小姑娘觉得自己象坐在一个大火炉旁边一样，铁炉镶有铮亮的黄铜花边和底座。火烧得多么旺，多么好啊！小姑娘刚刚伸出她的一双脚，打算暖一下的时候，哎呀！这是怎么样一回事儿？火焰忽然熄灭了！火炉也不见了。她坐在那儿，手里捏着那烧过的火柴，又回到了寒冷和孤单之中。

A second match was struck against the wall； it kindles and blazed, and wherever its light fell the wall became transparent as a veil. The little girl could see into the room within. She saw the table spread with a snow-white damask cloth, whereon were ranged shining china-dishes； the roast goose stuffed with apples and dried plums stood at one end, smoking hot, and which was pleasantest of all to see；the goose, with knife and fork still in her breast, jumped down from the dish, and waddled along the floor right up to the poor child. The match was burnt out, and only the thick, hard wall was beside her.

It was Christmas Eve, a cold dark evening. There was coming a little poor girl. She was so cold and hungry. But she had to stay on the street. She had to sell the matches.

在那个圣诞节的前夜，天又黑又冷，一个小女孩，衣衫单薄，又冷又饿可她不得不留在大街上卖火柴……

It’s snowing. Six kids are singing …

雪在下。六个孩子在唱《平安夜》。

The little match girl showed. She was cold.  She was walking on the street with a pair of big slippers.

卖火柴的小女孩上场。她显得很冷。她穿着一双大拖鞋在街上走着。

Girl: Oh, what a cold day! Matches…，matches…，who wants some matches?  Sir, would you

buy some matches?

女孩(台词):噢，多么冷的天啊！火柴……火柴…..，谁要火柴啊？先生，你要卖点火柴吗？

Pedestrians 1: Oh, no, no.

行人1（台词）：哦，不，不。

Girl: Merry Christmas, Sir, Madam. Do you want some matches? They’re cheap.

Girl: (Sadly) Oh, how can I do? I have still so many matches！Father will not let me go home if I

haven’t sold even one match. How can I do?

女孩(台词):（难过地）噢，我该怎么办呢？还有这么多火柴没有卖出去！如果我连一根火柴都没有卖出去，

爸爸一定不让我回家。我该怎么办呢？

Girl: (Sang) I’m alone in the world. No one cares about me.（我活着好孤独，没有人关心我）

I’m alone in the world. Selling matches for live.（我活着好孤独，只能卖火柴为生）

I dream of my mother. And my dear grandma.（我好想妈妈，还有我亲爱的奶奶）

I dream of a new dress. And a happy new year.（我好想有件新衣服,可以快快乐乐过新年）

Girl:  (Say) Oh, I’m so lonely. I’m so cold. I’m so hungry. No one cares about me. No one want

my matches. Oh…

女孩：(自言自语)噢，我好孤单。我又冷又饿。没有人关心我。没有人要我的火柴。哎……

(Sang again) I’m alone in the world. No one cares about me. I’m alone in the world…

(又唱起来)

Girl: (Said cheerfully) Matches, so many matches. I want my matches. It’s me who want the

matches. The little fire, it can let me feel warmer, as my grandma can do. The light will be

so beautiful, so warm.

女孩：(兴奋地对自己说)火柴，这么多的火柴。我自己要了。需要火柴的人就是我。那小小的火焰，可以让我感到温暖，跟奶奶给我的温暖一样。它一定很美，很温暖。

Scene Ⅴ：The girl pulled one match out and struck it on the wall.

场景五：她拿出一根火柴，往墙上一擦。

The bright match light brightened the girl’s face and warmed her heart. In the wonderful moment,

she began to dream. And now she was in front of a big stove.

解说(画外音)：火柴那明亮的火焰照亮了女孩的笑脸蛋，温暖了她的心。在这美妙的时刻，她开始做梦。她梦到自己正站在一个大火炉跟前。

(The stove came up.) (火炉上场)

Girl: A stove! How warm and beautiful！

女孩：火炉！好暖和好美呀！

(She stretched out her feet. Just then, the blaze went out. And the stove vanished).
