“Mr. Khrushchev Says…”

sting首先指出了尼基塔·赫鲁晓夫在1956年11月的一句非常著名的话：“我们要埋葬你们”（更多资料请参考百科里的词条：尼基塔·赫鲁晓夫），直指资本主义西方。这句话是在1956年11月18日对参加由波兰使馆在莫斯科举办的招待会的西方大使们说的。（歌词：Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you）

赫鲁晓夫事后对此作出解释：“如果我想要把你们每个人都埋葬掉，那我一辈子还干不完。我的确说过这个，但是有人故意歪曲了我的讲话。这并不是说在什么时候把什么人从肉体上埋葬，而是说在社会的历史发展中社会制度的改变。”“我说过，从历史的发展和历史的观点来看，资本主义要被埋葬，共产主义将代替资本主义。”

因为赫鲁晓夫让冷战这个观念深刻地刻在了全世界人的意识里，所以sting选择在歌里提到他的名字。


“Oppenheimer’s Deadly Toy…”

sting对冷战的后果做出警告，其中包括对“共同毁灭原则”这个信条而发出的警告。(歌词中："there's no such thing as a winnable war/It's a lie we don't believe anymore" 没有什么所谓的可赢的战争，我们已经不再相信这个谎言了。)

1981年里根上任美国总统，开始有了关于使用核武器的话语。里根曾说：“没错，在欧洲可能会有一场有限的/小型的核战争。”美国国务卿亚历山大·黑格在1981年说过：“我们的应急的计划是向苏联投放一枚警告性核弹，以示美国想要开始一场核战争的意图。”1981年末，纽约时报报道说里根总统签署了一份国家安全计划文件，批准美国打且赢一场全球性的核战争。当时里根的一些首要参谋员态度很清晰，就像1981年，里根的一名首要参议员Richard Pipes说的那样：“除非俄国放弃共产主义，否则一场战争是无可避免的。”。Pipes在1982年又称：“核战争的可能性为40%，我们的战略是打一场必胜的核战争。”（The probability of nuclear war is 40 percent…and our strategy is winnable nuclear war）。

在1994年的一次采访中，sting交代了一些歌词的背景（我只翻译重要的部分）：“...在里根政府造成的妄想症下，俄国人被看做灰色的被操控的比人类低级的生物，好像他们唯一的用处就是被炸掉。当时，我的朋友有个小发明可以收到俄国卫星的信号。我们会一边喝酒一边在美国的午夜看俄罗斯的早间节目。很明显的，在看到那些少儿节目时，我们发现俄国人根本不像别人告诉我们的那样。这首歌的创作是被我儿子的一个问题而促成的，他问我是否有一个可以将整个世界炸毁的炸弹存在，而我不得不告诉他：“是的，它是存在的。”他就这样知道了这恐怖的事情，当时我们曾在这恐怖的威胁下生活了许久。将Prokofiev的一段歌偷来塞在一首流行音乐里是很厚颜无耻的行为，可是这做法在这种情况下是正确的。
