5月15日经济学人上有一篇文章题为China vows a “fight to the end” in trade feud with America. 更多请看公号“高斋外刊双语精读”一起做翻译、学外刊。
原文：Over the past year President Donald Trump has tweeted about China 133 times;
参考译文：过去一年，美国总统特朗普发布了133条与中国有关的推特；
1. Over the past year也可以说During the past/last year，主句是完成时，所以是has tweeted。
2. tweet：它既可以作名词，表示“利用推特twitter社交网络发送的消息”。“发一条推特”就可以说“send out a tweet”；
它也可以作动词，表示“发推，在推特上写/说”，“上Twitter，阐述……”。
金融时报例句：
As another friend tweeted: "these kids are telling their life stories" .
正如另一位朋友在Twitter上所写的：“这些孩子正演绎着他们自己的人生故事”。
Many professors now blog and tweet about their ideas and research.
现在，很多教授都写博客和上Twitter，藉此阐述他们的见解和研究。
在外刊中就讲过Instagram，“In their haste to Instagram their ice cream, however, they neglect history. 然而，他们忙着在Instagram上分享冰淇淋照片时，却忽略了历史”。
3. Tweeted about发布关于什么内容的推特：使用的介词是about。所以tweeted about China发布了与中国有关的推特。
4. tweeted about China 133 times“发布了133条与中国有关的推特”。注意“133 times”前不能加介词for，总共多少次直接是times，如果加for，是具体第几次的意思。比如:
He was married for the second time, this time to a Belgian.
他第二次结婚，这一次是和一个比利时人。
5. 如果将tweet用作名词，tweeted about China 133 times也可以写成“has sent out 133 tweets about China”。
特朗普如此频繁发布推文，也难怪被网友戏谑为“推特治国”（Donald Trump’s Twitter diplomacy）了，虽然与民众直接交流了，但也架不住经常引发吐槽啊。
此前《华尔街日报》与NBC新闻的一次民调就显示，近七成美国人对特朗普“推特治国”的做法表示不满。不过推特依旧很多很多！
6. “by contrast”作插入语，它可以表示“相比之下”。
例如经济学人上的这句话：
Last month, by contrast, VAT remained at 15%, petrol prices stayed put.
相比之下，上个月的增值税维持在15%，汽油价格不升不降。
它还可以表示“相反；和……相反”。
继续来看经济学人上的句子：
By contrast, Amazon, which Hollywood finds less threatening, has deals with all the main film studios except Disney's.
相反，在好莱坞看来不会造成什么潜在威胁的亚马逊公司，已经与除迪斯尼之外的大部分影视公司签订了协议。
这段话中的“by contrast”是“相比之下”的意思，表示对比，将中美两国领导人的反应进行对比。
7. mostly：副词，指“大多，多半”。注意这句话中的mostly修饰的是“kept mum about”。
8. kept mum about：“keep mum about”是固定表达，意思是“保持沉默，保持缄默；闭口不谈”。
经济学人在表示“犯人对自己的罪行保持沉默”时是这么说的：
Two prisoners have good reason to keep mum about their crime.
两名囚犯有充分的理由对他们的罪行保持沉默。
“保持沉默”的同义表达有：Remain mute、keep/stay/remain silent、hold one's tongue等。
9. The trade dispute：指“贸易争端，贸易冲突”。“贸易争端”还可以说the trade war、the trade spat、the trade tussle等。注意是spat这些是可数名词，所以说a trade spat，或今天这里是特指the trade spat。
从这里可以看出表示“争端”的时候war和tussle可以互换，比如在3月1日经济学人有一篇文章，写到了重庆火锅和四川火锅，就使用了tussle和war，如Two cities tussle over whomakes the tastiest Sichuan hotpot和they are at war over which has the best Sichuan hotpot成都和重庆为哪家的火锅更好吃而争论不休。
第二句：But in the past few days that has begun to change.
然而，过去这几天，情况发生了变化。
1. “in the past few days”：意思是“过去几天，在过去几天里”。
例如《华尔街日报》上的这句话：
Social media, particularly in the past few days, have helped to change that perception, he said.
他说，“社交媒体，尤其是在过去几天，使人们改变了那种想法。”
2. “that”：that指代上文提到的情况。所以that has begun to change翻译为“情况发生了变化”。
第三、四句：“If you want to talk, our door is wide open,” said an anchor on China’s most-watched news programme on May 13th, in a clip that went viral. “If you want to fight, we’ll fight you to the end.”
5月13日，主持人康辉在央视新闻联播中说道：“谈，大门敞开；打，奉陪到底”。这段视频便迅速登上热门。
1. 英文习惯是说话内容+说话者，中文则相反，是说话者+说话内容。所以英译汉时先翻译谁谁谁说，再翻译具体说的内容。
这句话原文虽然是两个句子，但是中文只有一句话。说话的内容要合到一起去。即先翻译“said an anchor on China’s most-watched news programme on May 13th”，再把说话内容“If you want to talk, our door is wide open”和“If you want to fight, we’ll fight you to the end”放到一起。这个我在高斋CATTI和MTI课程里面讲过很多遍了，一定要注意哈。
2. anchor：读作[ˈæŋkər]，这个词作名词时可以表示“锚”，“抛锚”就是“drop anchor”；They anchored the boat. 他们抛锚停船。
anchor也可以表示“支柱，靠山”，例如“全家的顶梁柱”，就可以说“the anchor of the family”；He provided an emotional anchor for her. 他是她的精神支柱。
它还可以表示“电视（台）节目主持人”。这个词在表示“主持人”之意时，更多指的是新闻节目主持人。根据“on China’s most-watched news programme”可知，这句话的anchor是“主持人”的意思。
3. 在某一电视节目上或中用介词“on”，如：
on the main CCTV news programme that night在当晚中央电视台的新闻联播中
所以今天这篇里面是on China’s most-watched news programme。
在某一视频里说了什么话用介词“in”，比如In a video在视频里，在录像里，所以今天这篇里面是in a clip。
4. China’s most-watched news programme：直译就是“中国收视率最高的新闻节目”，但是这么翻很啰嗦，而且意思上也不准确。既然翻译是给大家看的，那就直接使用“央视新闻联播”。
“收视率最高的”节目除了用“the most-watched”，还可以说“the top-rated”。
5. on May 13th：具体哪天用介词on；某月用介词in，如“5月”就是“in May”；但是“5月中旬”用介词in，即“in the middle of May”。
6. “If you want to talk, our door is wide open; If you want to fight, we’ll fight you to the end.”国内外各大媒体对这句话进行了翻译，比如
《纽约时报》：If the U.S. wants to talk, our door is open. If the U.S. wants to fight, we’ll be with them till the end.
《华盛顿邮报》：If we discuss, our door is always wide open; if we fight, we’ll fight to the last.
Malaysia Chronicle：If you want to talk, our door is wide open. If you want to fight, we’ll fight you to the end.
《环球时报》：Talk? Our door is wide open. Fight? We will fight to the end!
7. in a clip that went viral：clip和viral这两个词我们在讲小猪佩奇那篇文章中都有见到。我们首先来回忆一下那篇文章是怎么说的：
A promotional clip for a movie featuring the character has gone viral, earning the brand — previously more popular among city-based children — new fans in rural Chinese regions.
最近，《小猪佩奇过大年》的电影预告宣传片大火。小猪佩奇一直深受城里孩子的喜爱，这次又在中国农村地区收获了一批新粉丝。
clip这个词则是指“(电影、广播或电视节目的)剪辑，片段”。小猪佩奇里的“A promotional clip” 就是电影的“宣传预告片”或“宣传短片”。电影的宣传片自然不可能播放全部内容，都是由剪辑后的一些片段组成。
在这篇文章里“in a clip”中的clip同样是指电视节目的片段，所以这里clip是“这段视频”。
8. “that went viral”是“a clip”的后置定语。汉语喜句子，因此，译文将“a clip that went viral”翻译为一个小短句，即“这段视频便迅速登上热门”或“这段视频便迅速走红”。
