前些日子，对付一套联合国粮农组织关于农作物推广的文献。工作中，随着一系列农作物名称表格，如wheat麦，paddy稻，potato土豆，corn玉米之类的，突兀地钻出了个rape。
这倒是令我一惊，咋，这里面居然还有rape？这么个不雅的称呼。
当然，本能地，我也知道这肯定不是什么“强奸”（啊，多不雅观），而是别的啥玩意儿。
查字典，竟然是油菜。
以前，从未曾知道油菜居然也可以是rape。多少次，走过众多的超级市场，在食用油品类的货架跟前，提拎过那么多次的菜油瓶，上面写的都是vegetable
oil，cole
oil等等，就再无其它感想产生。
所以就孤陋寡闻了。
以前，在国外时，聆听一些当地老太太们的指点，知道了有些英语词汇是不能随便登大雅之堂的，尤其是在女性面前，比如rape，比如commit（这个常用词儿也够麻烦，咱中国学生一般就知道它是“委任、委托”之类，不晓得它还可以是“通奸”呀）等等。
大概正因为如此，西方国家的超级市场里，会使用vegetable
oil，cole
oil来指油菜、菜籽、菜籽油等概念，而避免使用rape。但偏偏就有例外，这不，这联合国的材料也照用不误。
所以就更加茅塞不开了。
其实，大辞典说明了，rape作“强奸”或“油菜”理解，并非一个词的两重意思，而是根本不同的两个词，只是写法拼法完全一样，但起源、属性完全不同，也即英语的“同形异义词”，而非“多义词”。这种词类，也属英语的麻烦，幸好不多。
