In the future, Jake Sully is brought to another planet which is inhabited by the Na’vi, a race with their own language and culture. Not long before, when his brother is killed in a robbery, Jake decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora.
There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native Na’vi, in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the surgery that will fix his legs, Jake cooperates the military unit with an attempt to infiltrate the Na’vi people using an "avatar" identity.
As Jake is surrounded by a pack of beasts while his first time in the widewood, Neytiri joins him in the battle and saves him. Jake follows Neytiri and says thanks to her. He is then told that the reason he was saved was due to his “strong heart and lack of fear”. Soon Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri.
The restless military head moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand. Finally, with the help from all the Pandorian tribes and the divine tree Eywa, Jack and the Na’vi people fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora. In the end, they won while Jake passes through the eye of Eywa and wakes up in his Avatar self through a grand ceremony.

In A.D. 2154,[8] the story’s protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former U.S. Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.
Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake will be able to walk again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Na’vi female, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña).
Over time, Jake integrates himself into the Na'vi clan, and begins to fall in love with Neytiri. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth and the Na’vi, forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of Pandora.

Avatar had been in development since 1994 by Cameron, who wrote a 114-page scriptment for the film.[8] Filming was supposed to take place after the completion of Titanic, and the film would have been released in 1999, but according to Cameron, "technology needed to catch up" with his vision of the film.[9][10] In early 2006, Cameron developed the script, the language, and the culture of Pandora.[11] He has stated that if Avatar is successful, two sequels to the film are planned.[12]
The film was released in traditional 2D and 3D formats, along with an IMAX 3D release in selected theaters. Avatar is officially budgeted at $237 million;[3] some estimates put the cost as high as $500 million – $300 million to produce and an estimated $150 million for marketing, with a further $50 million buffer inserted to cover further costs.[13][14] The film is being touted as a breakthrough in terms of filmmaking technology, for its development of 3D viewing and stereoscopic filmmaking with cameras that were specially designed for the film's production.[15] Opening to critical acclaim, it earned an estimated $27 million on its opening day and an estimated $73 million domestically after three days.
