省油是柴油发动机最大的优点之一，在日美厂商热衷于开发新能源发动机的时候，欧洲厂商仍致力于柴油发动机的研发和普及，其中很重要的一项就是柴油发动机的经济性好，可以节约能源。如果柴油发动机没有省油这一优点，这种响应慢噪音大的发动机，是不可能在轿车上得到普及的。为什么柴油发动机比汽油发动机省油呢，这并不是柴油燃烧值（能量密度）高于汽油，而是柴油的燃烧效率高，燃烧更充分，热能转化效率高。
在动力要求等其他方面相同的情况下，发动机是否省油，是由发动机的燃烧效率决定的，燃烧效率更高的发动机，可以将每克燃油产生的能量更多的转换为热能推动活塞运动，从而产生更多的驱动力。那么在驱动力需求恒定的情况下，需要的燃油量自然也就少了。
燃烧效率有一个很重要的指标，那就是燃烧是否更充分，如果有燃油没有充分燃烧就进入排气系统，是无法获得很高的燃烧效率的。柴油发动机的工作特性决定了其燃烧效率比汽油发动机要好得多。
更高的压缩比能提高燃烧效率，这在汽油发动机上也是如此，事实上现在汽油发动机的稀薄燃烧技术，从而获得更高的压缩比和燃烧效率，就是基于柴油发动机的原理而来的。柴油发动机的压缩比非常高，这时由于柴油的燃烧特性决定的。正由于柴油的这种抗爆性好，不易点燃的燃烧特性，柴油发动机汽缸内的空燃混合物不是点燃的，而是压燃的，这就要求有更大压缩比，产生更大的压力和热量，使气缸内的柴油燃烧。
如果汽油发动机由于使用汽油作为燃料，而汽油抗爆性差、燃点低，在压缩形成中，燃油混合物由于被压缩放出大量的热，如果压缩值过高，当放出的热量使得气缸内温度达到汽油的燃点，气缸的气体就会爆燃。由于柴油具有抗爆性好、燃点高的特点，柴油发动机可以使用更高的压缩比，这样相同体积的燃烧室可以装入更多的氧气。因此，燃料可以燃烧得更加充分。那么燃烧放出得热量也相应的更多。
另外，燃烧时间也影响燃烧的充分性，燃烧时间短就难以充分燃烧。高性能的赛车在高转速的时候油耗急剧增加就是基于这个原因。柴油发动机由于其燃烧特性，无法设计较高的转速，这本身也有利于充分燃烧。
