注3、4：引自圣经。David，大卫，被上帝选为以色列的国王。有一日傍晚，他在阳台闲逛时在月光下偶然发现一位非常美貌的女子正在沐浴。经打听得知这个迷人的女子名叫 Bethsheba（拔示巴），是大卫的一位部将Uriah（乌利亚）的妻子。大卫忍受不住占有拔示巴的欲望，将拔示巴接入宫中，与其同房。不久，拔示巴怀上了大卫的孩子，大卫惶恐，急忙召回远在前线的乌利亚，借口让其稍作休整，意图使乌利亚回到家中与妻子同房以掩盖拔示巴肚中孩子的亲缘归属。但是，乌利亚是一位忠于职守为国尽忠的勇士，他对大卫说：“国家处于危机，我怎有心思回家与妻子相欢，溺于安享。”乌利亚要求大卫将自己重新派回到战场上。大卫此时便顺水推舟，与前线大将约押密谋使乌利亚战死沙场。乌利亚死后，大卫将拔示巴迎进自己的后宫，名正言顺地占有了拔示巴。

由此我们可以知道歌词第一段（大卫求主宽恕）与第二段前3句（大卫邂逅拔示巴时情景）的含义。其中“baffled”我译为“徒劳哀求的”。因为baffle有徒劳挣扎意，并且贴合上述故事，所以我认为这样翻译是妥当的。
注5：引自圣经。以色列族中有个大力士，名叫参孙，上帝赐予他空手撕裂雄狮的神力，这使得以色列人的敌人非力士人颇为惧怕，但是，参孙有个弱点：上帝与其约定不得剪发，若如是，则神力尽失。参孙爱上了一位非力士族的姑娘，名叫达利拉。非力士人赐予达利拉许多钱财，命她与参孙相好并套出他为何力大无穷的秘密。参孙在达利拉的三次诱惑下以编造的故事将蒙混过关，但最后他将自己的秘密告诉了的达利拉。一日，非力士人趁参孙熟睡时将他的头发剪去，参孙的神力也一并消失了。非力士人于是弄瞎了他的眼睛，将他囚禁在磨坊中磨谷子。（详见圣经旧约，士师记，第13到16章）
