2. 同音异义词
同音异义词（homophone）指的是发音相同。但拼写和意义都不相同的词，也有人把这类词称作同音异形词。例如：

也有三个或三个以上的同音异义词：

在英语的同形异义词中，同音异义词的数量最多，这是因为英语的拼写和发音之间的关系特别复杂。英语字母a可以读成不同的音：如cat [kaet]，came [keim], calm[ka:m], call [ko:l], rota [reute]。而[i:]这个长元音又可有各种不同的拼写方法：meet, mete, seat, seize, niece, key, quay, police。这种现象造成英语的拼写困难。英国剧作家幽默大师萧伯纳举过一个极端的例子：ghoti应该跟fish [fif]同音，因为gh可以读成[f]（cough），o 可以读成[i]（women），ti可以读成[f]（nation）。同音异义词造成的拼写困难尤其大，英美人统计最易拼错的词时，几乎总是把there和their, its和it's, to和too这类词同音异义词包括在内。问题并不在于这些词特别难写，而在于写得匆忙时往往混淆。

另外，英语听力中还有一些所谓发音相似的单词，我们通常称其为Sound-like Words，这样的单词可以说不胜枚举，而且没有人可以将它们统统列出来，因为不同的学习者听到一个单词可能联想出若干相似发音的单词，这里也给大家起个头，然后大家继续补充下去。有一个好的方法，就是大家多做听写练习，如果听到哪个单词自己写的和正确答案不同，就把这两个单词记在自己的小笔记本上，大声的朗读出来，比较它们的不同，经过一定量的训练后相信同学们一定会有很大的提高。
