London's British Museum is going to become bigger. Government officers think it is too SMALL to hold so many exhibitions. They say they want to BUILD more galleries. The new galleries will hold bigger exhibitions and make the museum one of the BEST in the world. In recent years, the MUSEUM has not been able to hold the huge crowds. In 2006, the demand for TICKETS was far greater than the number of tickets available for its exhibitions about Persia and Michelangelo. Neil MacGregor, the museum's director, said, “For the Michelangelo we could have had three times as many visitors as we had IF we'd had space.” The new 1,000 square metres space will ALLOW more people to see these kinds of popular large-scale exhibitions.
UNFORTUNATELY, the new buildings were not completed in time for September's exhibition, The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army. The largest number of terracotta warriors from China's Forbidden City LEFT China and came to London. The museum had already SOLD over 30,000 tickets. They had to borrow exhibition space FROM its reading room. The British Museum had to REFUSE to put on the Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibition at the same time as the CHINESE exhibition because it did not have enough space for BOTH. If the new buildings were FINISHED in time, it could have enough space to run the exhibitions from China and Egypt at the same time. Instead, the Tutankhamen exhibition had to be shown in another museum of London.
