2013年2月9日萨拉在街上走遇到一个叫做比利的流浪汉。她拿出钱包，倒出所有钱给了这个流浪汉。他们都不知道这个慷慨的小举动会改变他们的生活。
萨拉不知道在给比利零钱的同时把她的一枚钻戒也给了他，直到次日清晨才发现。这枚钻戒是之前放入钱包的。随后萨拉和她的丈夫比尔一起回去试着找到比利，但这流浪汉已经不在那儿了。流浪汉主动把这枚钻戒送还给了萨拉。夫妇俩非常开心，他们各自都掏空钱包给了比利来报答他的诚实。
比尔是一位网页设计师，他想做一些事来帮助这个流浪汉，因为这个流浪汉的诚实让他感到非常不可思议。因此在2月18日，他创建了一个特殊的网站为这位流浪汉募捐。仅仅四天时间，比尔收到了超过八万五千美金，数字还在上升。
然而此事还没结束。有一个好心人愿意帮助比利与他一起生活，告别住在无棚的日子。另外，多亏了新闻报道，让比利与失散27年的哥哥埃德温重逢。
这些好运气仅仅是因为比利做了该做的事——送回不属于他自己的物品。
