I was describing a friend whom I met at the supermarket the other day to my American friend Susan, for Susan also knew her. However, Susan could not think of whom I was talking about form beginning to end. She asked me :“What’s her calling card?” What she said kept me in the dark .I wondered what this had to do with the calling card of that friend. Did Susan have the ability of recalling whom her friend was by the calling card that her friend was using?

On one weekend I was free ,so I promised to accompany my good friend to watch a football match between teenagers and cheer for her son, who played the goal.
The football field at the school was already full of teenagers bouncing and vivacious, whose bright football shirts dotted the field and made spring in the air. Standing or sitting by the field, the parents looked equally excited as their children.
The whistle was blown, and the young players entered the field one after another. All of a sudden, a parent, not far from me, with a rough appearance shaped his hands like a tube and shouted towards the field, “Break a leg!”
The man was really unreasonable! How could he ask the children to fight against each other as to break a leg in order to parade their superiority and strive to outshine others?
I quietly told my friend about what I thought. She snorted with laughter and said: “You have misunderstood him, he has good intentions.”
“Has he?” I still looked blank.
“It is said that it has something to do with performers making curtain-call in a theater. The more brilliant the performance is ,the more times the performers have to give their encores and answer the curtain-call to satisfy their audience will continue.Therefore,every time before the performance, people like to say ,’Break a leg!’ to wish the perfumers success. It’s very close to ‘Good luck’ in meaning ,which we often say.”
After saying that, my good friend made a curtain-call in the pose of “Breaking a leg” to me with her left leg pulled backward and right leg slightly bent.
Oh! I had really wronged the kind-hearted man.

有个周末，闲来无事，便答应陪好友去看一场少儿足球比赛，为她的守门员儿子助威。
校园里的绿茵场上早已被四处蹦蹦跳跳的小不点身上鲜艳的球衣点缀得春意盎然。家长们在赛场边或站或坐，显得与孩子们一样兴奋不已。比赛的哨声响起了，小将们陆续进场。突然，我身旁不远处一位外表粗犷的家长，手所至成筒状对著赛场喊了一声：“Break a leg!”
这人好不近情理，怎麼能够让孩子们互相争斗争强好胜，以至打断一条腿呢？
我把我的想法悄悄告诉了好友。她噗哧一笑，说首：“你误会了，他是一番好意！”
“是吗？”我仍一脸茫然。
“据说这跟剧院里演员谢幕有关。表演越精彩，演员应观众请求返场谢幕的次数就越多。大概到腿累了再也直不起来为止吧。因此，在演出之前，人们爱用‘Break a leg’来预祝演出成功，这跟我们常说的‘Good luck’意思很接近。”
好友说到这里，左腿一撤，右腿微屈，给我来了个“断腿式”的谢幕姿势。
噢！我的确错怪了那位好心的家长。


Can you dig it?-----你能弄明白吗？

One day, not long after I started working in a surveying company, I was assigned to work done outside the office with a colleague at a construction site for surveying boundary markets. Perhaps due to the construction, the fixed maker ,which was previously surveyed and set up, was removed and lost .My colleague and I make a great deal of effort to look for the market but could not find it. As a result, it was almost impossible for us to proceed with our work. Therefore, my colleague decided to phone our company for construction in a public telephone booth.
Before he left, he gave the computer forms for reporting statistics to me and said:“I know it’s got to be somewhere around here ,I want you to take a look at the sheets see whether you can dig it .”
After a while, my colleague came back. he was really startled by what he saw.
It turns out that “dig” in American English has another meaning than the dictionary definition. The second meaning is understanding or finding out by searching or looking for information, etc. However, I had already dug a big hold half a person’s depth in the ground.

在一个月饼节的对话中，提到了个说法—长生不老，但好多朋友不知道如何表达了，或许头脑中只有西游记的概念，比如什么仙丹之类的东西，却没有想长生不老的本意是什么，所以表达出现瞬间的停顿，很正常了。

而且整个句子运用了虚拟语气，加大了表达的难度，给人感觉语法很好，对吧！

●附：中秋节的传说：
Mooncakes are to Mid-Autumn Festival what mince pies are to Christmas. The seasonal round cakes traditionally have a sweet filling of lotus seed paste or red bean paste and often have one or more salted duck eggs in the center to represent the moon. And the moon is what this celebration is all about. Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month, it is the time when the moon is said to be at its brightest and fullest. This year the festival falls on October 1.
There are two legends which claim to explain the tradition of eating mooncakes. One Tang Dynasty myth holds that the Earth once had 10 suns circling it. One day all 10 suns appeared at once, scorching the planet with their heat. It was thanks to a skillful archer named Hou Yi that the Earth was saved. He shot down all but one of the suns. As his reward, the Heavenly Queen Mother gave Hou Yi the Elixir of Immortality, but she warned him that he must use it wisely. Hou Yi ignored her advice and, corrupted by fame and fortune, became a tyrannical leader. Chang-Er, his beautiful wife, could no longer stand by and watch him abuse his power so she stole his Elixir and fled to the moon to escape his angry wrath. And thus began the legend of the beautiful woman in the moon, the Moon Fairy.
The second legend has it that during the Yuan Dynasty, an underground group led by Zhu Yuan Zang was determined to rid the country of Mongolian dominance. The moon cake was created to carry a secret message. When the cake was opened and the message read, an uprising was unleashed which successfully routed the Mongolians. It happened at the time of the full moon, which, some say, explains why mooncakes are eaten at this time.
Mooncakes are usually stamped with Chinese characters indicating the name of the bakery and the type of filling used. Some bakeries will even stamp them with your family name so that you can give personalised ones to friends and family. They are usually presented in boxes of four which indicate the four phases of the moon. Traditional mooncakes are made with melted lard, but today vegetable oil is more often used in the interests of health.
Mooncakes are not for the diet-conscious as they are loaded with calories. The best way to wash down one of these sticky cakes is with a cup of Chinese tea, especially Jasmine or Chrysanthemum tea, which aids the digestion.

第二个传说讲的是在元朝，朱元璋领导的起义军计划起义来摆脱蒙古族的统治。他们用月饼来传递密信。掰开月饼就可以找到里面的密信，起义军通过这种方式成功的发动了起义，赶走了元朝的统治者。这场起义发生在八月十五之时，于是中秋节吃月饼的习俗便在民间传开来。

Fair Play for All Students

Nearly 10 million students will sit the national college entrance examination tomorrow.
When the number of students sitting the test far exceeds the total number that the universities will enrol, a system in which students with better scores are enrolled by better universities is a comparatively fairer one for all concerned.
Some, who believe that they can bend the rules by using connections or by influencing officials in charge, act as brokers in order to make a commission.
Swindlers also get involved. They will pose as brokers able to obtain extra quotas from better universities by lubricating the channels with money.
There have been instances over the past few years of parents being swindled into paying such crooks large sums of money, only to find that the brokers vanished after they have handed over the cash.
The Ministry of Education has been pushing for greater transparency in order to guarantee fair play for all who will sit the exam.
This project requires that universities must make public the exact number of students they are going to enrol for specific majors, the relevant policies, any information concerning the enrolment, the channels for candidates to lodge complaints and the results of any violations of rules and irregularities that have been found and dealt with.
This project also requires efforts to ensure that there is no cheating in the exams, since getting away with cheating undermines the hard work of all honest candidates.
This will function as a deterrent to those dishonest candidates.
Co-operation from candidates and their parents will help this project make a difference.
If we all play by the rules, then those who either want to bend the rules or swindle parents will have no chances.
