中秋”一词，最早见于《周礼》。根据我国古代历法，农历八月十五日，在一年秋季的八月中旬，故称“中秋”。一年有四季，每季又分孟、仲、季三部分，三秋中第二月叫仲秋，故中秋也称为“仲秋”。

随着社会的不断发展，古人赋予月亮许多传说，从月中蟾蜍到玉兔捣药，从吴刚伐桂到嫦娥奔月，丰富的想象力为月宫世界描绘了一副副班驳陆离的胜景。自汉至唐，墨客骚人纷纷吟咏月亮及月中之事，八月十五月圆时成为抒发感情的极佳时刻。至北宋太宗年间，官家正式定八月十五日为中秋节，取意于三秋之正中，届时万民同庆。中秋之夜，明月当空，清辉洒满大地，人们把月圆当作团圆的象征，把八月十五作为亲人团聚的日子，因此，中秋节又被称为“团圆节”。

中秋节成为一年之中的重大节日，又与科举考试有着极其微妙的关系，在我国封建社会，开科取士，一直是统治者十分重视的一件大事。而三年一次的秋闱大比，恰好安排在八月里举行。胜景与激情结合在一起，人们便将应试高中者，誉为月中折桂之人。每到中秋，必须进行隆重庆贺，成为全社会人民的重要风俗，经朝历代，盛行不衰，中秋节逐渐成为我国汉族三大节日（春节、端午、中秋）之一。

嫦娥奔月

相传，远古时候有一年，天上出现了十个太阳，直烤得大地冒烟，海水枯干，老百姓眼看无法再生活去。

这件事惊动了一个名叫后羿的英雄，他登上昆仑山顶，运足神力，拉开神弓，一气射下九个多余的太阳。

后羿立下盖世神功，受到百姓 的尊敬和爱戴，不少志士慕名前来投师学艺。奸诈刁钻、心术不正的蓬蒙也混了进来。

不久，后羿娶了个美丽善良的 妻子，名叫嫦娥。后羿除传艺狩猎外，终日和妻子在一起，人们都羡慕这对郎才女貌的恩爱夫妻。

一天，后羿到昆仑山访友求道，巧遇由此经过的王母娘娘，便向王母求得一包不死药。据说，服下此药，能即刻升天成仙。

然而，后羿舍不得撇下妻子，只好暂时把不死药交给嫦娥珍藏。嫦娥将药藏进梳妆台的百宝匣里，不料被蓬蒙看到了。

三天后，后羿率众徒外出狩猎，心怀鬼胎的蓬蒙假装生病，留了下来。

待后羿率众人走后不久，蓬蒙手持宝剑闯入内宅后院，威逼嫦娥交出不死药。

嫦娥知道自己不是蓬蒙的对手，危急之时她当机立断，转身打开百宝匣，拿出不死药一口吞了下去。

嫦娥吞下药，身子立时飘离地面、冲出窗口，向天上飞去。由于嫦娥牵挂着丈夫，便飞落到离人间最近的月亮上成了仙。

傍晚，后羿回到家，侍女们哭诉了白天发生的事。后羿既惊又怒，抽剑去杀恶徒，蓬蒙早逃走了。气得后羿捶胸顿足哇哇大叫。悲痛欲绝的后羿，仰望着夜空呼唤爱妻的名字。这时他惊奇地发现，今天的月亮格外皎洁明亮，而且有个晃动的身影酷似嫦娥。

后羿急忙派人到嫦娥喜爱的后花园里，摆上香案，放上她平时最爱吃的蜜食鲜果，遥祭在月宫里眷恋着自己的嫦娥。

百姓们闻知嫦娥奔月成仙的消息后，纷纷在月下摆设香案，向善良的嫦娥祈求吉祥平安。从此，中秋节拜月的风俗在民间传开了。

嫦娥奔月的故事以鲜明的态度和绚丽的色彩歌颂、赞美了娥娥，与古文献有关嫦娥的记载相比较，可见人们对嫦娥奔月的故事做了很多加工，修饰，使娥娥的形象与月同美，使之符合人们对美的追求。 与现代流传甚广的“嫦娥奔月”相左，《全上古文》辑《灵宪》则记载了“嫦娥化蟾”的故事：“嫦娥，羿妻也，窃王母不死药服之，奔月。将往，枚占于有黄。有黄占之：曰：‘吉，翩翩归妹，独将西行，逢天晦芒，毋惊毋恐，后且大昌。’嫦娥遂托身于月，是为蟾蜍。”嫦娥变成癞蛤蟆后，在月宫中终日被罚捣不死药，过着寂寞清苦的生活，李商隐曾有诗感叹嫦娥：“嫦娥应悔偷灵药，碧海青天夜夜心。”

吴刚伐桂

抬头仰望明月，可见当中有些黑影，在我国便传说这就是吴刚在伐桂。唐代，演绎出吴刚砍桂的神话，传说月中桂树高达五百丈，这株桂树不仅高大，而且有一种神奇的自愈功能。有一位西河人姓吴名刚，本为樵夫，醉心于仙道，但始终不肯专心学习，因此天帝震怒，把他居留在月宫，令他在月宫伐桂树，并说：“如果你砍倒桂树，就可获仙术。”但吴刚每砍一斧，斧起而树创伤就马上愈合，日复一日，吴刚伐桂的愿望仍未达成，因此吴刚在月宫常年伐桂，始终砍不倒这棵树。而他也不断的砍下去 。

玉兔捣药

相传有三位神仙变成三个可怜的老人，向狐狸、猴子、兔子求食，狐狸与猴子都有食物可以济助，唯有兔子束手无策。后来兔子说：“你们吃我的肉吧！”就跃入烈火中，将自己烧熟，神仙大受感动，把兔子送到月宫内，成了玉兔。

玉兔入月宫

传说很久以前，有一对修行千年的兔子，得道成了仙。它们有四个可爱的女儿，个个生得纯白伶俐。

一天，玉皇大帝召见雄兔上天宫，它依依不舍地离开妻儿，踏着云彩上天宫去。正当它来到南天门时，看到太白金星带领天将押着嫦娥从身边走去。兔仙不知发生了什么事，就问旁边一位看守天门的天神。听完她的遭遇后，兔仙觉得嫦娥无辜受罪，很同情她。但是自己力量微薄，能帮什么忙呢？想到嫦娥一个人关在月宫里，多么寂寞悲伤，要是有人陪伴就好了，忽然想到自己的四个女儿， 它立即飞奔回家。

兔仙把嫦娥的遭遇告诉雌兔，并说想送一个孩子跟嫦娥作伴。雌兔虽然深深同情嫦娥，但是又舍不得自己的宝贝女儿，这等于是割下它心头的肉啊！几个女儿也舍不得离开父母，一个个泪流满面。雄兔语重心长地说道：“如果是我孤独地被关起来，你们愿意陪伴我吗？嫦娥为了解救百姓，受到牵累，我们能不同情她吗？孩子，我们不能只想到自己呀！”

孩子们明白了父亲的心，都表示愿意去。雄兔和雌兔眼里含着泪，笑了。它们决定让最小的女儿去。

玄宗漫游月宫

在唐朝，最富有传奇色彩的就是游夜宫的传说了。相传唐玄宗与申天师及道士鸿都中秋望月，突然玄宗兴起游月宫之念，于是天师作法，三人一起步上青云，漫游月宫，但宫前有守卫森严，无法进入，只能在外俯瞰长安皇城，在此之际，忽闻仙声阵阵，清丽奇绝，宛转动人！唐玄宗素来熟通音律，于是默记心中。这正是“此曲只应天上有，人间哪得几回闻！”日后玄宗回忆月宫仙娥的音乐歌声，自己又谱曲编舞，这便是历史上有名的“霓棠羽衣曲”。

月饼的传说

月饼象征团圆，是中秋祭月和拜土地公的必备祭品。而中秋节吃月饼的习俗，是由元朝末年流传下来的。

相传当时中原人不甘受蒙古人的统治，有志之士皆思起义抗元， 然欲整合反抗的力量，却苦于无从传递消息，所以刘伯温便想一计策散布将有瘟疫的流言，要人们于中秋节买月饼来吃以避祸。大家买了月饼回家后切开一看，里面藏了纸条写着“八月十五夜起义”，于是民众纷纷响应，因而一举推翻元朝。月饼因而成为中秋节的应景食物。
