四川的建制沿革：
四川在距今25000年前开始出现人类文明，并在新石器时代晚期形成了以宝墩文化、三星堆遗址、金沙遗址为代表的高度发达的古蜀文明。
1949年12月，中国人民解放军进驻成都。1950年1月，撤销四川省，并将今四川地区划分为川西、川东、川北、川南4个行署区和西康省。4个行署区和西康省共辖21个专区、6个市、191个县。
1952年9月，又撤销川东、川西、川南、川北行署区，恢复四川省建制，在成都成立四川省人民政府。
1954年9月，重庆市再次并入四川省建制。1954年，四川省通江县碑坝区划入陕西省。
1955年，撤销西康省，金沙江以东各县划归四川省。1957年，四川省旺苍县三道乡划入陕西省。
1997年，原四川省计划单列市[30]重庆市与地级市涪陵市、万县市、黔江地区从四川省整体划出组建重庆直辖市。至此川渝分治，形成今四川省行政区域。
2014年10月，国务院批复四川天府新区成为国家级新区。
2016年4月，国务院批复《成渝城市群发展规划》，将成都定位为国家中心城市。
