楼上说错了，此处second是形容词，用来直接修饰主语，或者说是名词性成分，而was在此处不能称作谓语动词，应该是系动词。

还有一点，first和second无论什么时候都是序数词，序数词和形容词名词这些不一样，序数词是相对于基数词而言的，如first（第一）相对于one（一）；而形容词名词则是指一个词的词性！

其实说“He was first in the queue”也没错，此时的first和second一样就是作形容词用，若用“the first”则是“the first one”省略了one。

副词直接修饰谓语动词was

第一句中的first是序数词,所以加了the
