Pizza—a farm food. Have you ever seen a pizza tree? A pizza bush? Slices of pizza planted in a garden? Yet pizza is a food made up of products grown in Michigan. Your students will learn about the history of a food they care about. They will find out how each of its ingredients can be grown on Michigan’s farms. What we see in the field ends up as steaming hot slices of a food that almost everyone loves. Students will learn about the diversity of Michigan crops and how crops are produced, processed, delivered and made into the ingredients of pizza. They will learn about the geographic area crops are grown in. They will learn about the profession of farming. This unit introduces the importance of agriculture in Michigan.


CHICKEN IN SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE
Iogredients:
2 chicken legs, about 11/3 1b ; 1 tbsp shredded ginger; 2 spring onions,shredded;1/2 egg

Marinade: Dash of sesame oil and pepper;1/3 tsp salt
Thickening: 3 tbsp red vinegar; 3 tbsp water;11/2 tbsp tomato sauce; 21/2 tbsp tomato sauce; 21/2 tbsp sugar ; 1 tsp mung bean flour; 1/4 tsp salt
Method:
1.Wash, wipe and chop chicken legs into pieces. Marinate for 20 minutes.
2.Blend egg with 2 tbsp of mung bean flour.Add in chicken and mix well.
3.Heat up enough oil in frying pan or wok.Add in chicken gradually and deepfry until cooked.Drain. 4.Saute ginger with 1 tbsp of oil. Pour in thickening and bring to boil.Add in chicken. Mix well.Dish up.Sprinkle with spring onions. * Red vinegar is Zhejiang vinegar.

With a history of more than 1,800 years, dumplings are a classic Chinese food, and a traditional dish eaten on Chinese New Year's Eve, widely popular in China, especially in North China.
Chinese dumplings can be made to look like Chinese silver ingots (which are not bars, but boat-shaped, oval, and turned up at the two ends). Legend has it that the more dumplings you eat during the New Year celebrations, the more money you can make in the New Year.

Dumplings generally consist ofminced meat and finely-chopped vegetables wrapped in a thin and elastic dough skin. Popular fillings are minced pork, diced shrimp, fish, ground chicken, beef, and vegetables. They can be cooked by boiling, steaming, frying or baking.

Almost all Chinese people can make dumplings. First they mix the dough, second make the dough into round "wrappers" with a rolling pin, third fill the wrappers with stuffing, fourth pinch the "wrapper" together into the desired shape, and fifth cook them. Different dumpling fillings have different meanings.

Chinese don't eat Chinese sauerkraut dumplings at Spring Festival, because it implies a poor and difficult future. On New Year's Eve it is a tradition to eat dumplings with cabbage and radish, implying that one's skin will become fair and one's mood will become gentle.

When making dumplings there should be a good number of pleats. If you make the junction too flat, it is thought to purport poverty. Some Chinese put a white threadinside a dumpling, and the one who eats that dumpling is supposed to possess longevity. Sometimes a copper coin is put in a dumpling, and the one who eats it is supposed to become wealthy. Dumplings should be arranged in lines instead of circles, because circles of dumplings are supposed to mean one's life will go round in circles, never going anywhere.

hot-pot
It is a must to eat hot-pot in Chongqing. This is the home of hot-pot and hot-pot in other places is not authentic, say Chongqing natives, just a reproduction of the masters.
It is said that the origin of hot-pot is related to the fact that Chongqing surrounded by water. The Yangtze and Jialingjiang Rivers, like two dragons, energize Chongqing and dampen the air in the city. In order to save time, the porters working at the wharfs boiled various kinds of food in big pot and added some hot pepper and spices to ward off the cold. Slices of meat and vegetables were dropped into the pot, which was partitioned by thin iron sheets. The porters asked for some liquor, stripped off their clothes while eating (hot-pot is firey!) and eating was often accompanied by drinking games.
