The full name of United Kingdom is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,which consists of England,Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland. There are the head of state,the king or the queen, and a central government, which is composed by the House of Lords and the House of commons.In Britain, the Prime Minister is the the most powerful man in the government.It is located in the northwest of the continent of Europe.Its mainland lies on the Great Britain,around which there are the North Sea,the English Channel,the Celtic Sea,the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.Its land area is 24.36 square kilometers and the number of population is about 60 million.It is the first industrialized country in the world.Its society is multi-cultural and open-minded.Its captial,London,is the biggest and the most international in the Europe.

At 9'-0" diameter, 7'-6" high, and weighing in at 13 tons 10 cwts 3 qtrs 15lbs (13,760 Kg), the hour bell of the Great Clock of Westminster - known worldwide as 'Big Ben' - is the most famous bell ever cast at Whitechapel. This picture, painted by William T. Kimber, the head moulder responsible for casting the bell, shows George Mears with his wife and daughter inspecting the casting prior to despatch. Big Ben was cast on Saturday 10th April 1858, but its story begins more than two decades earlier....
On 16th October 1834, fire succeeded where Guy Fawkes and his fellow plotters had failed on 5th November 1605, and destroyed the Palace of Westminster, long the seat of the British government. Those few bits of the Old Palace that survived the fire - most notably Westminster Hall, which was built between 1097 and 1099 by William Rufus - were incorporated into the new buildings we know today, along with many new features.

Big Ben remains the largest bell ever cast at Whitechapel. Visitors to the foundry pass through a full size profile of the bell that frames the main entrance as they enter the building. The original moulding gauge employed to form the mould used to cast Big Ben hangs on the end wall of the foundry above the furnaces to this very day.

Among the gift items available from Whitechapel Bell Foundry are a finely detailed miniature of the bell itself and an illustrated booklet about Big Ben. These can both be found on our merchandising page.

Previously, I lived in the countryside where the sun always rose. Every morning, I got up early to see the sunrise. As the sun came out, trees, flowers, birds and other animals woke up from their long sleep and smiled gently towards the sun. “What a glorious view!” I whispered. But as I moved to the city, I could hardly see such a glorious view now. Nowadays, with the development of society, the living step is so fast that we are always so busy and we don't even have the time to take a breath. Since the world has various culture, the distinction between different culture is obivious, too.
Such cross- cultural communication sometimes can be difficult. They are originated from misunderstanding, discrimination, or merely unfamiliar with other culture. The influences of such misunderstanding are usually negative. For instance, negotiation with foreign partners may be prevented due to lacking of relevant knowledge of their culture.
Then what can we do to decrease, if can not eliminate such misunderstanding? First and foremost, it is fundermental to get in touch with different culture so as to know more. We can take advantage of network, as well as magzines and other materials to master more knowledge of other cultures.
In this age, cross- cultural communication is inevitable. Thus, it is important and necessary to take part in such trend and communicate effectively.
