Ah! what pleasant visions haunt me
As I gaze upon the sea!
All the old romantic legends,
All my dreams, come back to me.
Sails of silk and ropes of sandal,
Such as gleam in ancient lore;
And the singing of the sailors,
And the answer from the shore!
Most of all, the Spanish ballad
Haunts me oft, and tarries long,
Of the noble Count Arnaldos
And the sailor's mystic song.
Like the long waves on a sea-beach,
Where the sand as silver shines,
With a soft, monotonous cadence,
Flow its unrhymed lyric lines:--
Telling how the Count Arnaldos,
With his hawk upon his hand,
Saw a fair and stately galley,
Steering onward to the land;--
How he heard the ancient helmsman
Chant a song so wild and clear,
That the sailing sea-bird slowly
Poised upon the mast to hear,
Till his soul was full of longing,
And he cried, with impulse strong,--
"Helmsman! for the love of heaven,
Teach me, too, that wondrous song!"
"Wouldst thou,"--so the helmsman answered,
"Learn the secret of the sea?
Only those who brave its dangers
Comprehend its mystery!"
In each sail that skims the horizon,
In each landward-blowing breeze,
I behold that stately galley,
Hear those mournful melodies;
Till my soul is full of longing
For the secret of the sea,
And the heart of the great ocean
Sends a thrilling pulse through me.

尽管有人说此诗的素材“主要来源于斯库尔克拉夫特的著作，作者缺乏直接的生活体验；诗的韵律完全模仿芬兰史诗《卡勒瓦拉》”[1]，但是没有人能怀疑这是一部气势磅礴、情感跌宕，有时也颇具幽默的史诗，当然，比起荷马的《伊利亚特》，无论在篇幅，还是细节描写，尚不足与之并提，整个诗篇浪漫气息有余，但“中气”稍逊一筹，“爱伦·坡和惠特曼两个人都有保留地说过，朗费罗有丰富的才能，可是他的诗没有韵味，因为诗中的含意已由辞汇和韵律囊括尽了”[3]。
但它仍是不失为一部伟大史诗，这部关于北美印第安人民族英雄的史诗，甚至影响了近代捷克作曲家德沃夏克(Antonin Dvorak 1841-1904)，在他的《e小调第九交响曲》中，人们可以听到人类灵魂的共同回响，那就是对故乡的思恋和愁绪[2]。
故乡，不只是人类微贱之躯的栖息之所，它还是人类的精神家园。当海华沙带着族人，迎接白人（paleface）上岸，嘱咐族人要善待这些远道而来的客人，或许他已经预感到他的族人日后的命运。所以在他经历过他的朋友——音乐家Chibiabos与大力神Kwasind的死亡，经历“饥饿”的灾难和明尼哈（Minnehaha）——他的妻子的离世，到看到白人踏上他们的土地，直至最后的告别离去（消失、死亡），实践了他父亲对他的预言，到了那西方风域，成为西北风——吹向故乡的风。
朗费罗与霍桑（Nathaniel Hawthorne，1804 ）是同班同学，在美国文学史上皆是属一属二的人物，朗费罗的诗歌在1990年代以前，在国内也是颇受推崇的，但近年来似乎已声息俱微。这里做一个并不对称的比较，朗费罗的诗与霍桑的小说进行比较，尽管两人的文学的浪漫主义色彩浓厚，但是霍桑的文字，显得更为清新幽深，意境深邃，比如红字（the Scarlet Letter，1850）以及The house of the seven gables。在这一点上，仅就朗费朗的海华沙之歌而言是无法企及的，这也大概就是爱伦·坡（Edgar Alan Po，）所说的为什么他的诗没有韵味的所在，这是否与朗费罗后来受到法国自然主义作家左拉（Emily Zora）的影响，还无从考究。
但《海华沙之歌》的开头和结尾的几章是近乎完美的，至少结构上是如此，是颇具古希腊悲剧色彩的，比如海华沙父亲神谕般的预言，到最近他无可逃避的死亡的命运，这是近乎古希腊悲剧人物的共同特点。
在读过海华沙之歌之后，再读郭沫若的《女神》，似乎又再多一比较的角度，《女神》在中国现代文学史上备受推崇，但读后感觉，他的时代意义大于其文学意义，其波澜壮阔的战士情怀，已淹没了文学情绪，特别要注意的是，《女神》写于1920年代，在那个时代的文学，无论是徐志摩的诗，林语堂的小品文，还是胡适的冷静政论或鲁迅的尖锐小说，在这样的氛围之中，《女神》确实具有一种别样的气息——凌风而至，逆风飞扬的精神气质，或许只有梁启超的《少年中国论》才具有的一种情怀和气息。

朗费罗曾经写过这样的诗句，这是诗人创作时应具有的情怀，而读者阅读时亦应具有同样的sympathy.
