传说太古时候有只叫‘年’的怪兽，每到开春前一天便晚上出来害人。人们为了避开他经常跑到山里。有天，’年‘要出现了，一位白发乞丐讨饭来到村里。只有一位婆婆慌忙中给他施舍些食物告诉他要逃跑，而老人说他那晚住宿婆婆家就能制住‘年’。人们不信，都跑了。那晚，‘年’到了村里。它看到婆婆家门上贴了红纸，又看到屋里烛火通明。‘年’刚进门一看，’劈劈啪啪‘，披着红袍子的老乞丐正往火堆里扔竹子。竹子爆裂声音如雷，这一下把‘年’吓走了。第二天（大年初一）大家赶回来一看，村里安然无恙，婆婆回家发现了‘三宝’红色，光，和炸响。这样大家就都知道怎么驱赶‘年’兽了，所以我们过年总是贴对联，点灯，放爆竹。
In prehistoric times, there was a beast called 'Year'. Every year, the night before spring, it would come out and hurt people. To avoid it, people ran to the mountains. One day, when 'Year' is about to appear again, an old white-haired beggar came to the village. Only an old lady gave him some food amidst the panic and told him he should run away too, but the old man said that he could stop 'Year' as long as he could stay at her home that night. No one believed him, and they all ran.
That night, 'Year' came to the village. It saw red paper stuck on the old lady's door, and saw that the house was brightly lit. As soon as 'Year' opened the door for a look, "bang bang" came the sound of exploding bamboo - the old beggar was dressed in a red robe throwing bamboo into a bonfire. The exploding bamboo was like thunder, and 'Year' ran away, afraid. The next day (first day of near year), everyone rushed back to see, and the village was completely fine. The old lady went home and found the 'three treasures' - the color red, bright lights, and exploding noises. Thus, everyone knew how to chase away the 'Year' beast, and this is why we always stick up red poetry scrolls, light lamps, and set off firecrackers.
