但此歌的原唱并非是玛丽娅·凯莉，而是Harry Nilsson，因为Without you这首曲子，Nilsson永远不会被乐迷遗忘。Harry Nilsson不仅唱腔独树一格，处世风格亦是一绝。和大多数穷于应付宣传的艺人不同，Nilsson极少在公共场合出现，也不喜欢制造新闻。自从1973年以后，他像隐士般，自顾自的从事创作，渐渐地在歌坛消失。当Mariah Carey于1994年初，再度把这首歌唱进排行榜时，Nilsson却悄悄的告别了人间。

这首作品最早的主人除了它的原创者Ham和Evans外，真正首唱的却是一位也许内地乐迷并不太熟悉的美国唱作人Harry Nilsson，一个满脸络腮胡也不知道修饰的脏不拉几的音乐人，他除了能歌会唱之外，却还有一件能喝酒、并能豪饮的本事，也正是凭着这两件感性之事，让他在纽约因而得识当时侨居此城的John Lennon，甚至还有The Beatles的吉它手George harrison，尤其是他和前者这位乐坛神话般的人物的交情更是非浅，以至于John Lennon在生前还把他的日记交给了Harry Nilsson保管。事实上，这两个纵情于酒（色字先略过不提）之中的男人，在当时音乐风格的取向上也有很多相同的地方，融入了很多布鲁斯音乐和凯尔特音乐元素，亦正亦邪、亦俗亦雅。
这首由Harry Nilsson首唱的《Without You》，本人无意一定非得和Mariah Carey的版本分出个你死我活、争出个上下高低，但我确实非常喜欢这个儠遢男人对于此曲的演绎处理，主歌部分朦朦胧胧的要死不活样，到过渡段落带点沧桑、带点颓废的成熟，直至最后完全用呐喊声刺上去的高声部分，不依靠假声，也不依靠花腔的高音技巧加工，就那么重重地托起，然后消失于音响的最后端，一切就又像没发生过一样，就像那张收录于此曲首唱版本专辑《Nilsson Schmilsson》封面上那个穿着浴袍的Harry Nilsson一样介于一种幻梦于现实的表情，就那么空幻、就那么失落。
说起这首《Without You》的歌曲也确实够具传奇色彩的，就在这首歌因为尼尔森翻唱成热门金曲之后的没多久，其中的一个作者佩特•汉姆（Pete Ham）就于1975年自杀身亡，而八年之后另一位作者汤姆•伊万斯（Tom Evans）居然也走上了同样的不归路。更为神奇的是在1994年1月15日，当后晋的歌手玛丽亚•凯莉（Mariah Carey）再度推出这首日后让她享用不尽的翻唱歌曲时，尼尔森却在睡梦中过世，玛丽亚•凯莉的《Without You》刚好登陆英国榜成为冠军，然后成为她的传世经典作品之一了。
