Two of the grammar school's most defining characters are its private nature, and its heavy dependence on donations. For grammar schools created through the donations of churches, monasteries, and individuals or groups, the original purpose was to prepare students for occupations which required Latin as a language basis. At the time, its selection process was open to people of all social levels. However, as the quality of the education provided at the grammar schools rose, and as the price of an education rose along with it, grammar schools began to be dominated by the aristocracy and the middle-upper classes, and headed down the road of elite eductation. Later, with the rising of the middle class, the students in grammar schools expanded from the children of aristocrats and future clergymen to gradually include the children of big industrialists, merchants, and town squires. These social classes slowly became the main body of the grammar schools. Also, the existence of "preperatory schools" which helped prospective students gain entrance to grammar schools, and which catered exclusively to the nobility only helped to add to the social divide of the grammar school system, with the result that the lower classes could almost never get an education. This conflict was most heated and apparent during the 19th century. To achieve the ends of elitist education, the educator Locke advised upper class youths not to mix with the "uneducated, immoral" lower class youths, so as to keep the lower classes' "coarse language, trickery, and vice" from rubbing off from them. This vividly illustrate the wide class divide in the grammar school system.
