1863年7月1日至3日发生的葛底斯堡战役正值美国内战关键时刻。在三天的战事中，双方发射了700万发子弹，双方伤、亡、失踪人数多达5.1万人，也因此成为美国历史上最为血腥的战斗。
战斗结束后，仅在葛底斯堡大地上死亡的5000匹战马便成为恐怖一景。此役之后，北方赢得战争，因而避免国家分裂之势再也不可逆转。

林肯的讲话是极简短、极朴素的。这往往使那些滔滔不绝的讲演家大瞧不起。
