Le marketing (on utilise aussi parfois le néologisme français mercatique) est une discipline qui cherche à déterminer les offres de biens et services en fonction des attitudes des consommateurs et à favoriser leur commercialisation. Il comporte un ensemble de méthodes et de moyens dont dispose une organisation pour s'adapter aux publics auxquels elle s'intéresse, et pour utiliser, voire susciter, des comportements favorables à la réalisation de ses propres objectifs.

Définition

"Le marketing est l'effort d'adaptation des organisations à des marchés concurrentiels, pour influencer en leur faveur le comportement de leurs publics, par une offre dont la valeur perçue est durablement supérieure à celle des concurrents" (Mercator, 8e édition, 2006).

Le marketing est l'affaire des organisations (qu'elles soient marchandes ou non, comme les associations). Il cherche à adapter la politique de ces organisations à un environnement par nature changeant. Il a fondamentalement un rôle d'influence et de persuasion (ce qui conduit ses critiques à n'y voir que manipulation et propagande), les publics pouvant être très variés (consommateurs, entreprises clientes, pouvoirs publics, électeurs...). Enfin cette définition souligne deux éléments importants de l'approche contemporaine du marketing : le concept de valeur perçue et celui de relation dans la durée (marketing relationnel et non seulement transactionnel).

Dans le secteur marchand, le marketing sert à définir, concevoir et promouvoir profitablement dans un contexte concurrentiel des produits adaptés en permanence aux besoins et attentes de la clientèle solvable ciblée et aux contraintes de l’environnement, et à développer une relation commerciale durable avec ces clients.

On cherche à augmenter la notoriété du produit, à développer l’intention d’achat et à fidéliser au maximum le client. Le produit pouvant être un bien ou un service. Les ventes de biens sont en outre de plus en plus entourées de services qui accroissent la valeur ajoutée, donc le prix de vente final.

On va pour cela concevoir le produit (prototypes, pré-séries) ou le service, étudier les différentes contraintes (économiques, technologiques, juridiques, institutionnelles, concurrentielles). Cette démarche est liée à celle de l'innovation-produit, avec un poids croissant de la recherche qualitative.

Dans le cas de satisfaction de besoins non solvables, on peut considérer cette approche Marketing comme de la publicité nécessaire à la création d'un portefeuille de nouvelles clientèles : le produit/service est gratuit au départ, mais devient ensuite payant.

Il faut garder en tête que le marketing est à la fois un esprit ou une connaissance du marché et un outil ou un ensemble de méthodes d'étude du marché.
