关于英语if i may ask?的用法

是对的。where you are from 充当ask的宾语即宾语从句，从句要使用陈述语序，所以是you are from而不是are you from.
这两个都是课堂师生对话。两种情况的前一句都是祈使句，即老师要求学生用英语应答。
第一种情况是老师教学生回答“Are you David?" 这个问句。
第二种情况是老师教学生如何提问。
实际上，这是个用作为插入语的句子。“如果我可以问的话。”
要是用if 就不是一般疑问句了，这时不可以用may i这种形式了。
