中国，中元节（the hungry ghost festival）。
本来中元节是初秋庆贺丰收、酬谢大地的节日，后来道教视中元节为地官赦罪日，佛教传入后又以此日为盂兰盆节，加上东亚巫觋宗教及民间信仰习合，不少地区在同一日都有各式活动。民间俗称鬼节、七月半。
华人地区的习俗主要是祭祖以及祭祀孤魂野鬼（又称“好兄弟”），广东、港澳称为“烧街衣”。近代至今部分人常把中元节与盂兰盆节视为阴森恐怖的鬼节，有不少禁忌，例如不要贴墙走、不要在七月搬家或结婚、晾衣服不能留到半夜；
但部分禁忌如晚上不要外出等并没有传统文化基础，因为传统上地官诞不少祭祀和庆祝活动都是晚上进行，与传统习俗有矛盾。
在某些农村地区保留较多祭祀土地神或田神、祈求丰收的习俗。
起源
中元节的出现不会迟于汉代，最初是农民在夏末秋初祭祀田神、感谢大地的节日，《史记·滑稽列传·淳于髡》记载，当时农家以猪蹄、酒来祭田神，祈求五谷丰收，后来祭品不限于猪蹄与酒，祭祀场地也不限于农田之内。
中元节原是小秋，有若干农作物成熟，民间按例要祭祖，用新米等祭供，向祖先报告秋成。因此每到中元节，家家祭祀祖先，供奉时行礼如仪。七月十五上坟扫墓，祭拜祖先。
佛教徒在佛欢喜日供养众僧，以功德回向父母，称为盂兰盆法会，后来这天就有了盂兰盆节的名称。
