The Fox and the Crow

A Fox once saw a Crow fly off with a piece of cheese in its beak and settle on a branch of a tree. ‘That’s for me, as I am a Fox,’ said Master Reynard, and he walked up to the foot of the tree. ‘Good-day, Mistress Crow,’ he cried. ‘How well you are looking to-day: how glossy your feathers; how bright your eye. I feel sure your voice must surpass that of other birds, just as your figure does; let me hear but one song from you that I may greet you as the Queen of Birds.’ The Crow lifted up her head and began to caw her best, but the moment she opened her mouth the piece of cheese fell to the ground, only to be snapped up by Master Fox. ‘That will do,’ said he. ‘That was all I wanted. In exchange for your cheese I will give you a piece of advice for the future .’Do not trust flatterers






A wolf was almost dead with hunger. A house-dog saw him, and asked, "Friend, your irregular life will soon ruin you.

"Why don't you work steadily as I do, and get your food regularly?"

"I would have no objection," said the wolf, "if I could only get a place." "I will help you," said the dog. "Come with me to my master, and you shall share my work."

So the wolf and the dog went to the town together.

On the way the wolf saw that there was no hair around the dog's neck.

He felt quite surprised, and asked him why it was like that?

"Oh, it is nothing," said the dog. "Every night my master puts a collar around my neck and chains me up. You will soon get used to it."

"Is that the only reason?" said the wolf. "Then good-bye to you, my friend. I would rather be free."



一只狼快要饿死了，一只狗看见后问他：“你现在的无规律的生活一定会毁掉你，为什么不像我一样稳定地干活并有规律地获得食物呢?”
狼说：“如果我有个地方住，我没有意见。”狗回答说：“跟我到主人那里去，我们一起工作。”于是狼和狗一起回到了村子。
在路上，狼注意到狗的脖子上有一圈没有毛，他很奇怪地问为什么会那样。
“噢，没有什么，”狗说，“我的主人每天晚上都用一条铁链子拴住我，你很快就会习惯的。”“就是因为这个原因吗?”狼说道，“那么，再见了，我的朋友，我宁愿选择自由。”

寓意:自由比安乐更重要。

　　God created the mule, and told him, "You will be mule, working constantly from dawn to dusk, carrying heavy loads on your back. You will eat grass and lack intelligence. You will live for 50 years."
　　上帝创造了驴子，对它说：“你从早到晚要不停地干活，背上还需要驮着重物。你吃的是草，而且缺乏智慧，你的生命将会有50年”。
　　The mule answered, "To live like this for 50 years is too much. Please, give me no more than 20."
　　驴子回答说：“像这样生活50年太长了，最好不要超过20年。”上帝答应了。
　　And it was so.上帝答应了它。
　　Then God created the dog, and told him, "You will hold vigilance over the dwellings of Man, to whom you will be his greatest companion. You will eat his table scraps and live for 25 years."
　　上帝创造了狗，对它说：“你需要随时保持警惕，守护着你最好的伙伴——人类和他们的住所。你吃的是他们桌上的残食。你的生命是25年。”
　　And the dog responded, "Lord, to live 25 years as a dog like that is too much. Please, no more than 10 years."
　　狗回答说：“像这样生活25年太长了，请您改变我的生命为10年吧。”上帝答应了狗的请求。
　　And it was so. 上帝答应了它。
　　God then created the monkey, and told him, "You are monkey. You shall swing from tree to tree, acting like an idiot. You will be funny, and you shall live for 20 years." 上帝创造了猴子，对它说：“猴子，你悬挂在树上，像个白痴一样令人发笑。你将活世上赐20年。”
　　And the monkey responded, "Lord, to live 20 years as the clown of the world is too much. Please, Lord, give me no more than 10 years."
　　猴子眨眨眼睛回答说：“主啊，如同小丑般活20年太长了，10年就够了。”上帝也答应了猴子的要求。
　　And it was so. 上帝答应了它。
　　Finally, God created Man and told him, "You are Man, the only rational being that walks the earth. You will use your intelligence to have mastery over the creatures of the world. You will dominate the earth and live for 20 years." 最后，上帝创造了人，告诉他：“人，要有理性地活在这个世上，用你的智慧掌握一切、支配一切。人的生命为20年。”
　　And the man responded, "Lord, to be Man for only 20 years is too little. Please, Lord, give me the 30 years the mule refused, the 15 years the dog refused, and the 10 years the monkey rejected."
　　人听完后回答说：“主啊，人只活20年太短了。请您把驴子拒绝的30年、狗拒绝的15年和猴子拒绝的10年都赐予我吧。”上帝同样答应了。
　　And it was so. 上帝答应了它。。
　　And so God made Man to live 20 years as a man, then marry and live 30 years like a mule working and carrying heavy loads on his back. Then, he is to have children and live 15 years as a dog, guarding his house and eating the leftovers after they empty the pantry;
　　正如上帝安排的那样，人好好地活了开始的20年，接着成家立业，如同驴一般背着沉重的包袱拼命工作；然后，又像狗一样认真守护着孩子，吃光他们碗里剩下的食物；但人老的时候活得又像猴子一样，扮演小丑给孙子们取乐。

　　then, in his old age, to live 10 years as a monkey, acting like an idiot to amuse his grandchildren.
　　And it is so !!事情就是这样。（或许，很多人就是这样走过他们的人生。）
