天津作为中央的四个直辖市之一，也是我国北方之一的经济中心。天津面积为11919.7平方公里，分为15个区及3个县，94%的土地为平原。地处华北平原的东北角，天津东临渤海，北依燕山，拥有130公里的海岸线。
由于大陆和海洋气候的融合，天津四季分明。春天和秋天是最好的季节，而冬天寒冷，夏天炎热。天津人每年享受着春节和国庆两大长假，许多人要么游览名胜，要么出国放松身心。
天津之名，起源于永乐二年(1404年)，是为了纪念“靖难之役”的胜利由朱棣赐名，意谓“天子经由之渡口”。同年天津设卫，称“天津卫”。

She said that to show the features of this coastal city and the abundance of water resources，the designer set the theme around water. The Olympic Stadium and Aquatic Sports Center were smartly designed as smooth and Dynamic water-drop shapes. With the Gymnasium，there will be three bright “water drops” sprinkling on the surface. This design of "water drops" entering into the lake indicates human longing for a return to nature.
她说，为了展现这座沿海城市的风采及其富饶的水利资源，建筑设计者将其建筑围绕水的主题而展开。奥运体育中心和水上运动中心采用了平滑而动态的水滴形状的精巧设计。而体育馆更是有三滴晶莹的“水滴”散落在其表面。这种关于“水滴流入湖海”的设计象征着人类对重归大自然的渴望。
The project fully reflects the three notions of the Beijing Olympics. The unique originality of the "on-water stadium" and the energy-saving measures using lake water for cooling demonstrate the desire for a "Green Olympics". The use of fiber-optic communication links and intelligent management systems reveals substantance behind the "High-tech Olympics" slogan. The designer also pays attention to the special needs of the audience, players and referees, which embodies the idea of a "People's Olympics".
这种设计充分反映了北京奥运的三种奥运精神。
这种独创性的“水上中心”以及其利用天然湖水来降温的节能措施意味着对“绿色奥运”的期望；光纤通信线路和智能管理系统也显示出对于“科技奥运”这一理念的支持；而设计者同样特别关注到观众、运动员、以及裁判员的需求，这也正是拥护了“人文奥运”这一理念。
The Beijing Olympics are rapidly approaching and 11 million Tianjin people are preparing for it in every way. I am deeply moved by people's ardor in the preparation, which makes me plunge into the process unconsciously. I believe my students will be able to serve the Olympics as volunteers.
北京奥运会即将临近，一千一百万天津人民都翘首以待，做好了准备。我被人们积极的热情深深地打动了，而这也使我不知不觉地投入到这项活动中去。我相信我的学生一定可以成为为奥运服务的出色的志愿者。
