颜色含义知多少

我们生活的这个世界多姿多彩，颜色与我们的生活密切相关。语言中尤其是英语中涉及颜色的词组及短语亦是五花八门，不胜枚举，而且其中不少词语的含义非但与颜色本义无关，有时甚至是风马牛不相及的，总结起来颇为有趣。比如说 black tea的意思是红茶； black sheep指的是害群之马、败家子而非单指“黑色的绵羊”。 paint somebody black意为“说某人坏”而不是“把谁涂得漆黑”。 paint the town red意为狂欢作乐，绝不是“把小镇涂得一片通红”之意。现就英语中关于颜色的表达，分类作一简单介绍，以供广大英语爱好者参考。
Red（红色）从颜色上看，红色似火，热情奔放，因而其与革命或喜庆相联不足为奇了。红色成为革命之色，源于法国大革命时所用的红色旗帜。redletter意为“喜庆的”、“有纪念意义的”，那么a red-letter day就是一个不折不扣的“良辰吉日”，此说源于日历中的圣诞节或是一年中的其他纪念日都是用红色标出的习惯。red carpet是迎接贵宾所铺的红毯， roll out the red car-pet即指“隆重欢迎”。red faced是“脸红”、“难为情”。red head则指“红发女子”。也许是因为英国宪兵和美国的车站搬运工都戴红帽子的缘故，所以red cap有以上两种含义。而red flag有时指“使人生气的东西”，若waving red flag则既可以指“挥动红色的旗子”，还可以是指“惹人生气的事”。redblood意为“精力旺盛”或“勇敢、大胆”。see red意为“勃然大怒”。catch（take） somebody red-handed意为“当场捕获”或是“当场捉住”。至于 redtape指繁琐拖拉的公事进程，即“官僚作风”，则跟英国政府部门的公文都是用红色带子（red tape）捆扎的有直接关系。经济上入不敷出，我们称为“财政赤字”，源于账簿上的亏空项目历来是用红墨水登记的。因此，在英语中be in the red意为“出现赤字”（负债），be（get） out of the red为“不亏空”、或是“赢利”之意。red book指电话号码簿是因其封面为红色的缘故。red meat指牛羊肉，亦是因其肉色发红之故。此外，红色还有“危险”、“紧急”之意，像red alert就是指表示空袭、暴风雨或台风的“紧急警报”。
Black（黑色）在英语中black一词常与“坏的”、“邪恶的”事情相联系。其中最广为人知的恐怕要算 Black Friday（黑色星期五）一词了，有灾难发生的星期五。类似的还有Black Monday意为“开学第一天”，这是学生中颇为流行的一种叫法。 Black Saturday则指因已预借完工资而无钱可领的星期六。历史上还有两个 Black Thursday，一是指1851年2月6日的星期四，当时澳大利亚发生了一场特大森林火灾，火到之处，一片焦黑；一是指1943年10月14日，也是个星期四，美德空军在德国史温佛镇上空发生激战，战火激烈，两败俱伤，史称该日为 Black Thursdsy。其他如 black list（黑名单）， blackmarket（黑市），black-hearted（黑心的），这些与我们汉语中的某些说法有异曲同工之妙。 black eye即可指“被打得发青的眼睛”，也有“丢丑”的意思。black and blue则是名副其实的“青一块、紫一块，遍体鳞伤”。而 in black andwhite意为“白纸黑字'。上文曾提到 be in the red（亏损）一词，那么以此类推，根据记账时所用墨水的颜色，be in the black则是“赢利”之意，或起码也是“不亏损”的意思。因此，不能单纯地把black视为“不吉利”的“罪恶之色”。
White（白色）具有纯洁、无辜、善良、娇弱等含义。如 white lie意为“无恶意的谎言”。a white slave意为“被迫为娼者”。white hair boy是指“最受宠的孩子”而不是“少白头者”。而 white books指政府公文。 white collarworkers“白领工作者”，指像教师或高级职员等的“脑力劳动者”。 white alert指“解除警报”。 white meat除指小牛肉或猪肉外，也可以用来指鸡胸脯肉，皆因其肉色而来。white elephant指的是“贵而无用之物”，因为 white elephant被尊为神，谁要是得了这么个礼物，注定是要被害惨了的，试想谁有能力来供奉一尊活神呢？我国曾有某一品牌为“白象”的产品，投放国际市场后，始终打不开销路，究其原因，恰是 white elephant译名作怪。的确，谁愿意花钱买罪受呢？不过， a white day意为“吉日”，而 white moments of life则指的是“人生得意之时”或“佳运之期”。 white night意为“不眠之夜”。 WhiteChristmas（有雪的圣诞节）寓意“吉祥、如意”，这和中国的“瑞雪兆丰年”意义相似。至于 white heat一说与汉语中的“白热化”一词更是不谋而合。此外，在政治方面， white恰好red相反，它象征反动，如 a white area（白区），the white terror（白色恐怖）， the white army（白军）。
Yellow（黄色）在表示人的感情状态或特征方面， yellow指人胆小、怯懦，如 a yellow dog意为胆小鬼、卑鄙可耻的人。 yellow alert表示“预备警报”。而 yellow journalism却指通过不择手段地夸张、渲染来招揽读者的一种新闻编辑作风，即黄色编辑作风。 yellow book（Yellow Pages）绝非汉语中的黄色书刊，而是指常见于美国商店或家庭的用黄色纸印刷的商业分类电话簿。汉语中的黄色书刊，其“黄色”意为“下流的”，在英语中可译作 filthy book。
Brown（棕色）brown可表示被太阳晒得黝黑的皮肤的颜色，即健康之色。在英国英语中， the brown指大群黑色的飞禽。短语 in a brown study意为“沉思冥想”。 do it up brown是句俚语，有“把……做得尽善尽美”之意。至于 August则因八月之中草木树叶皆变成褐色而得此名，当然这是在英国发生的现象，由于所处地理位置的不同，中国的八月正是绿意甚浓的季节。
Blue（蓝色） blue是忧郁、悲伤之色。如 blue music即指调子忧伤、低沉、舒缓的音乐。 a bolt from the blue意为“晴天霹雳”。 out of the blue意为“突然”。世上，还没有见过蓝色的月亮，因而英语中有 once in a blue moon 一说，意思和汉语中的“铁树开花”差不多少，即千载难逢之事。星期一是继续工作的日子，对刚过完快乐、幸福的周末的人来说，blue Monday 一词是最恰当不过的了。blue-pencil作动词用，意为“删改”，源于美国编辑通常用蓝色铅笔删改稿件的习惯。blue stocking（女学者或女才子）则是来自18世纪的一种现象，当时英国文学社的女成员们，常穿蓝色袜子，由此用 blue stocking来借指有学问有才华妇女。至于用来指体力劳动者的 blue collar workers（蓝领工人）一词对大家来说并不陌生。短语 till all is blue意为“到最后”， drink tillall is blue则是“酩酊大醉”。 in a blue funk（fear）意为“极度恐慌”， make theair blue则有“骂街”的意思。 blue book（蓝皮书）是刊载知名人士，尤其是政府官员名字的书。 blue nose指的是所谓的维护社会风化的卫道士，而不是什么长蓝鼻子的人。还有像 blue film（黄色电影）， blue jokes（不正当的笑话）。此外，蓝色在英语中还可以表示高贵、出身名门，如 blue blood意为“高贵的门第和血统”，这大概是为了区别于寻常百姓的殷红鲜血吧。而blueribbon更是荣誉的象征，源自英国最高荣誉Carter嘉德勋章的蓝色绶带。而今在美国大小比赛的优胜者也常常被授与蓝色缎带，因而 blue ribbon代表的是荣誉，是实力。标有 blue ribbon的产品，对消费者来说是极具吸引力的。
Grey（灰色）灰色有消极、保守、黯淡之意， grey prospects意为“黯淡的未来”， grey hairs（heads）指老年人，源于人老之后，须发皆变成灰白之故。 the grey past指古代。与white（blue） collar相映成趣的是grey collar work-ers，这是个新词汇，指从事“第三产业”即服务行业的人员。短语 the grey ofthe morning（dawn）意为“黎明时分”，这跟天蒙蒙亮时的灰蒙蒙一片不无关系。
Purple（紫色）紫色是高贵、华美、宝贵之色，有幸运之意。 born inthe purple是生于皇室、贵族之家的意思。众所周知， patch一词是“补丁”之意，若是连补丁都是紫色的，那将是怎样呢？由此产生a purple patch的说法，指“顺境的日子”、“好过的日子”，在这里patch比喻为“一段日子”。
