欲望指数代表一切

在二代新作里，游戏中的角色都有自己最想要的心愿和最害怕的恐惧。心愿是模拟市民最想要作的事情，依据喜好有程度之分，比方说高斯最想要的是和莉娜结婚，其次是看到鬼、还有工作升迁等等其次的心愿。高斯害怕恐惧的事情可能第一是莉娜死亡（因为目前对高斯最重要的人是她），其次是工作被降级，再来可能是火灾。
《模拟人生2》的人物一旦在游戏中碰到这些事件，会影响他们的欲望指数，这个指数关系到人物的等级与称号，也会影响游戏中人物的表现和奖励。

这代角色可以选择是否把自由意志打开或关闭，打开的话，玩者可省去为他们打理大小事情的麻烦，看着他们自己行动就可以了，偶而去改变他们的行为顺序或行动。关闭的话就可以都自己控制他们的行为。游戏中的AI比前作好很多，比较不会有放着他们不管，结果容易死掉的情况。

更多的剧情与事件

游戏一开始就预设三组社区故事，分别是承袭一代的欢乐谷，这次是一代高斯家族25年后的剧情，人物便老了、邻居也变了，高斯家夫人不见，又有新邻居对高斯家族虎视眈眈，还有谁爱谁以及各种环境上的问题，欢乐谷这一个可直接载入的社区，预先设定好的游戏人物关系、剧情让玩者玩起来更有趣。有点类似《模拟市民》在游乐器平台上注重任务与剧情的表现。
另外，怪怪镇则是有神秘外星人降临的地方，当地人还有和外星人混血产生的小孩。最有趣的是外星人男性也可以怀孕，颠覆地球人对性别的逻辑。

另一个有趣的社区故事是以罗蜜欧与茱莉叶小说为故事背景的，玩者会发现，除了罗蜜欧与茱莉叶是相好的恋人外，两大家族在城镇中完全是对立的人际关系，在这样压力下交往的两人，其命运如何完全由玩者来发挥。

除了预设的这些社区故事外，玩者在游戏中的工作与生活，常常会碰到类似机会、命运的选择，这些选择的是件可能会让玩者工作进一步发展而升迁，但也有可能是不好的影响，受伤或是技能点数下降等等，有相当多的变化与选择。

游戏还有丰富但有脉络可循的随机事件，以及玩者产生的千变万化种游戏状态和游玩体验。

3D游戏引擎与复杂的人物关系

《模拟人生2》采用全新的3D引擎制作，人物角色有更丰富的表情，玩家可以近距离观察角色的表情。连动作和周围环境的关系都更逼真了。
《模拟人生2》游戏中呈现的3D效果惊人，不过我们大概了解到这款游戏用Nvidia的显示卡比Ati的显示卡要来得顺畅一些。玩者创造3D人物时，除了像发型和化妆的选择外，他们还能做基因选择，像发色、眼珠颜色、和肤色。玩家可以自订模拟人的脸部外观细节，双眼皮，迷你凤眼，细长睫毛所有细节都由玩者主控。甚至包括发型、肤色、体型、衣服游戏的场景也完全符合期望，加强并扩张建筑与购买模式，可以让许多中坚玩家花上数百小时为他们的心爱角色设计、建造并自订房屋。玩家可以建设多楼层的房屋，同时还可以架构阳台和地基，运用全新的墙壁处理和灯光选项来设计自订房屋，也能用各种颜色与布料自订家具。

透过DNA的设计，《模拟人生2》里面的模拟市民更能表达他们的情绪、感觉，并形成复杂的人际关系，也有离婚、外遇的现实生活。模拟市民将拥有记忆，以分辨朋友、家人和情人。在《模拟人生2》里，不只是被情人抛弃的模拟市民会记得这件事，另一个目睹事件发生的模拟市民也会记得，还能和他们的朋友分享。分手之后，被抛弃的模拟市民或许还在心碎。一个‘听到传言’的朋友可以轻拍受害者的背来减轻痛苦。然而，当他或她看到旧爱拥着新欢出现时，模拟市民的伤口上或许也会被洒盐。就是这种前因后果将惊喜、疯狂成功、和失败带进游戏里，让游戏呈现相当独特的风格。原本一代只能异性相恋的设定，这代不但可以有同性之爱，男女复杂的恋爱关系，以及更细致的情爱表现。

修改地形靠《模拟城市4》

《模拟人生2》另一个特点是复杂的地形可藉由《模拟城市4》来产生对应的sc4档案，虽然《模拟人生2》已经内建不少场景档案，可供玩者在建立新社区时使用，但《模拟城市4》强大的环境改造能力，让玩者可以做出有火山、大瀑布的特殊地形，在汇到《模拟人生2》中，或与人分享。这个部分这算是满有趣的设计，先前《模拟市民》的人物可以进入《模拟城市4》中游玩，而《模拟人生2》的人物虽然目前暂时不能进入《模拟城市4》，但未来可能有机会，同时也有可能在更新的《模拟城市5》来实现这个目标。Maxis让自己的不同游戏彼此之间可以连动，确实很巧妙。
