钦州，古称安州，有1400年悠久的历史，南北朝宋代时期置宋寿郡，梁代设安州。隋开皇十八年(公元598年)改安州为钦州。唐武德五年(公元622年)改宁越郡为钦州总管府，元改为钦州路，明初改为钦州府，民国年间改为钦县，属广东省钦廉专署所辖。解放后，广东省设钦廉行政专员公署，1951年改隶广西省，1955年复隶广东省。1965年7月再隶广西壮族自治区，改为钦州地区行政专员公署，下辖上思、防城、钦州、灵山、浦北、合浦、北海七个县市，1983年10月划出北海市和防城港，1987年7月划出合浦县归北海市管辖，1993年5月防城港市成立，划出防城县和上思县归防城港市管辖。1994年6月经国务院批准、钦州地区撤地设市，改为地级钦州市建制。

钦州港是个不可多得的天然深水良港，是孙中山先生《建国方略》中规划的“南方第二大港”。近年，由于钦州的区位优势突出，市委、政府采取措施得力，特别是实行了业主制建码头、仓储的形式，建设高潮迭起。目前，己建有万吨级码头3个，正在建3000吨至万吨级码头11个；己建成仓储（库）11个，总投资24。25亿元。工地，呈现一派热火朝天的喜人景象。据专家规划设计，近期可建6个作业区和两个内河作业区，建设1——9千吨码头1OO多个，三墩作业区可建3O万吨级泊位。远期吞吐能力1亿吨以上。钦州港的深水条件良好，中国罕见，世界也是少有的。钦州市区位优势非常突出。已建成的铁路有南（宁）—钦(州)、黎（塘）—钦(州)、钦(州)—北（海）、钦（州）—防（港）、钦（州）—钦州港等五条铁路和高速公路在钦州交汇。大交通的格局，已经形成。
钦州港的对外开放，加快了钦州市对外开放步伐，又带来商品经济的繁荣兴旺。钦州人开拓国际市场，取得了成功的经验，出口市场现扩大到美国、俄罗斯、加拿大、荷兰、埃及和阿根廷等23个国家和地区。
