“海宝”以汉字“人”作为核心创意，体现了“以人为本”的精神内函，。“海宝”以蓝色为主色调，代表着地球、梦想、海洋、未来、科技等元素，与上海世博会“城市，让生活更美好”的主题相符。“海宝”的主形态是水，水是生命之源，表明了中国融入世界、拥抱世界的崭新姿态。“海宝”的名字取自“四海之宝”，朗朗上口，与它的身体颜色呼应，符合中国民俗的吉祥称谓原则。海宝翘起的头发、翘起的大拇指都用来表现海宝自信、可爱、快乐俏皮而充满活力的性格特点，向全世界传达来自中国的真诚问候———“中国2010年上海世博会欢迎您！”
