创作背景：
《木兰诗》产生的时代众说纷纭，但据其最早著录于陈释智匠所撰的《古今乐录》，可证其产生之时代不晚于陈。诗中称天子为“可汗”，征战地点皆在北方，则其产生之地域在北朝。诗中有“旦辞黄河去，暮至黑山头”，“但闻燕山胡骑声啾啾”语。
黑山即杀虎山，在今内蒙古呼和浩特市东南，去黄河不远。燕山指燕然山，即今蒙古人民共和国杭爱山。据此，《木兰诗》中之战事，当发生于北魏与柔然之间。柔然是北方游牧族大国，立国一百五十八年（394—552）间，与北魏及东魏、北齐曾发生过多次战争。
而最主要之战场，正是黑山、燕然山一带。429年，北魏太武帝北伐柔然，便是“车驾出东道，向黑山”，“北度燕然山，南北三千里。”（《北史·蠕蠕传》，蠕蠕即柔然。）
此诗收入《乐府诗集》的《横吹曲辞·梁鼓角横吹曲》中，至唐代已广为传诵，唐人韦元甫有拟作《木兰歌》，可以为证。因此，学者们大都认为，民歌《木兰诗》产生于北朝后期。
它记述了木兰女扮男装，代父从军，征战沙场，凯旋回朝，建功受封，辞官还家的故事，充满传奇色彩。此诗产生于民间，在长期流传过程中，有经后代文人润色的痕迹，但基本上还是保存了民歌易记易诵的特色。
一、因为中国古代的诗文在翻译的时候有很大的难度，也很难把意境翻译到位，所以《木兰诗》的英文版本各不相同，有关这一首诗歌的英文版举例如下：
