~ The Double Seventh Festival, celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, is a traditional Chinese festival filled with romantic symbolism. It typically falls in August in the Gregorian calendar.
This festival occurs during the peak of summer, when the weather is warm and the grass and trees are lush and green. On clear nights, the sky is dotted with stars, and the Milky Way, stretching from north to south, is clearly visible. On each side of the Milky Way are two bright stars—the Cowherd (牵牛) and the Weaver Maid (织女)—which appear to gaze at each other from afar. Their story, a beautiful love legend passed down through generations, is a central part of the festival's lore.
Legend has it that an honest and hardworking man named Niu Lang (牛郎) lived alone after being driven out by his sister-in-law. Zhi Nu (织女), a fairy from heaven, fell in love with him and secretly came to Earth to marry him. They lived a happy life, farming and weaving, and had a son and a daughter. However, the God of Heaven discovered their union and ordered the Queen Mother of the West to bring Zhi Nu back to heaven.
With the help of celestial cattle, Niu Lang flew to heaven with his children. Just as he was about to catch up with his wife, the Queen Mother plucked a hairpin and struck the ground, creating a vast river that separated the couple. They were doomed to be apart, yearning for each other, their loyalty to love moving the magpies to form a bridge for them to meet. The Queen Mother was moved by their devotion and allowed them to meet once a year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, naming this day "Qi Xi" (七夕).
Scholars suggest the Double Seventh Festival originated during the Han Dynasty (206 BC–AD 220). Historical records from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 371–420) mention the festival, while Tang Dynasty (618–907) records describe Emperor Taizong's grand banquets. By the Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1279–1368) dynasties, markets sold articles specifically for Qi Xi. The bustling markets signified the festival's importance.
Today, while some traditional customs persist in rural areas, they are weaker or less prominent in urban centers. However, the legend of Niu Lang and Zhi Nu remains etched in the hearts of the people. In recent years, especially among urban youth, the festival has been celebrated as a Chinese Valentine's Day. Consequently, businesses selling flowers, drinks, and gifts enjoy increased sales during this time.
During the festival, it is traditional in some regions to eat chicken to symbolize the wish for the couple to live together happily ever after. In Zhejiang, especially in Jinhua, it is customary to kill a chicken on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, hoping that without the crow of a rooster, Niu Lang and Zhi Nu can remain together indefinitely.
The festival is also marked by the "Qi Xi" custom, where young women would traditionally display their needlework skills by threading needles and making small items. They would also offer fruits and other items to the Weaver Maid, praying for skill and a good marriage. In recent times, various handicrafts, such as paper decorations, have become part of the festival.
On the night of Qi Xi, women and girls would offer fruits to the moon, hoping for the blessings of the Weaver Maid. They would perform various rituals in the hope of obtaining wisdom and a fortunate love life.
In some areas, such as in Chengyang, it is customary to cover roosters with baskets to prevent them from crowing, as it is believed that the crowing will break up the meeting between Niu Lang and Zhi Nu, thus extending their time together.
In Fujian, people prepare food for the Weaver Maid to enjoy and pray for a bountiful harvest the following year. They burn incense, pray, and hope for blessings in various aspects of life, including fertility, longevity, and love.
