《礼记·王制》提到“五方之民，言语不通”，为了“达其志，通其欲”，各方都有专人，而“北方曰译”。后来，佛经译者在“译”字前加“翻”，成为“翻译”一词，一直流传到今天。
由于中国早期历史所处的环境，中华文化的近邻在很长时间内都没有自己的文字，所以直到佛教传入前，翻译并不广泛存在。
