详细故事：很久以前，有种怪兽叫“夕”，它在每年的年关都要出来伤人，连保护老百姓的灶王爷也拿它没办法，于是灶王爷上天请来了一位叫做“年”的神童。神童法力高强，用红绸和放在火中烧得劈啪作响的竹竿消灭了夕兽。
这一天正好是腊月的最后一天，老百姓为了感谢和纪念年在这一天除掉了夕，就把农历每年的最后一天叫“除夕”，把新年的第一天叫做过年。百姓希望家家都有年手中的红绸和鞭炮，于是红绸和放在火中烧的竹竿逐渐演变成了家家户户过年时都有的红对联、红鞭炮。这个关于年的传说可说条理清晰、有章可循。

在《诗经·小雅·庭燎》篇中，就有“庭燎之光”的记载。所谓“庭燎”就是用竹竿之类制作的火炬。竹竿燃烧后，竹节里的空气膨胀，竹腔爆裂，发出噼噼啪啪的响声，这也即是“爆竹”的由来。
可是有的地方，村民不知年兽怕红，常常被年兽吃掉。这事后来传到天上的紫微星君那儿，他为了拯救人们，决心消灭年兽。有一年，他待年兽出来时，就用火球将它击倒，再用粗铁链将它锁在石柱上。从此，“年”就被人们降服，成了镇宅保平安的益兽。每到过年，人们总要烧香，感谢紫微星君下界带来的平安。
