在英国对华进行鸦片走私和鸦片战争前后的侵略活动中，西方传教士所起的作用是不容忽视的。第一个来华的基督教传教士马礼逊和他的儿子马儒翰以及德籍传教士郭士立等人先后都服务于英国侵略东方大本营的东印度公司，与英国侵略者有着密切的关系。这些传教士来到中国，用他们自己的话：“与其说是由于宗教的原因，毋宁说是由于政治的原因”。他们利用传教的方便，研习中国的语言文字，熟悉各地的风俗习惯，不仅在贩卖鸦片、外交谈判中充当推销员和翻译官，而且搜集中国的政治经济军事等各方面的情报资料，为英国侵华活动出谋画策，起着急先锋和狗头军师的恶劣作用。以下着重介绍马礼逊父子和郭士立的有关情况。
马儒翰(JohnRobertMorrison，1814-1843)，英国人。传教士马礼逊的长子，一般中国史籍上称为小马礼逊或秧(young)马礼逊，出生于澳门。他在英国受短时期教育后到马六甲英华书院进修。自幼习汉文，对中国语言文字和社会风习很是谙熟。1830年(道光十年)十六岁时就在广州为英国商人作翻译。1832年编成《英华行名录》，1833年著《中国商务指南》。1834年马礼逊死后他继任英国驻华商务监督处中文秘书兼翻译官。他除热心传教事务，遵其父遗命修改《圣经》汉译本，与传教士麦都思、郭士立、裨治文等合作完成了新的译本，但却以更多的精力参加英国侵华的政治活动。
1839年(道光十九年)林则徐到广东查禁鸦片，中英交涉日繁，英方文件大多由马儒翰经手翻译。鸦片战争爆发后，他随同懿律、义律直接参加对中国的军事侵略，担任情报的翻译工作，其中包括参与义律与琦善1840年(道光二十年)7月大沽口的谈判和1841年1月迫订《穿鼻草约》的谈判以及1842年8月(道光二十二年七月)璞鼎查与耆英、伊里布等签订的南京条约的全过程。在战争进行时，他为璞鼎查出谋画策，干了不少坏事，例如在英军进入长江口后他知道长江沿岸清军没有设防，两江总督牛鉴庸儒腐败无作战决心，所以驱轮深入。到了京口，他又勾结扬州汉奸江寿民挟兵索贿六十万两白银，到了南京，他又声言要入城就食，索取饷糈三百万两。在南京，一切谈判主要由他“来往传说”时常以谩语相恫吓，表现极为恶劣①。南京条约签订后，他又同璞鼎查到定海、厦门等地，横生枝节，借台湾爱国军民抗英事件进行讹诈②。
由于他侵华有功，战后他被任命为香港立法行政委员会委员兼香港殖民政府秘书。1843年8月29日(道光二十三年闰七月初五日)，马儒翰因疟疾死于香港③。香港总督璞鼎查为英国侵略者丧失了一个侵华的急先锋和得力干将而深感惋惜，认为这是他们“国家的一大灾难”④。由此也说明了马礼逊父子在英国资本主义侵略中国初期的重要性。
