1a．表达地区和空间，这两个介词都可使用，只是不同在于：前者是指范围，而后者则是指面层。
例如：There is a multitude of islands in the Pacific．太平洋有许许多多岛屿。（指范围）
Our ship has been cruising on the Pacific．我国轮船在太平洋航行。（指洋面）
比较：They are living in Europe．他们在欧洲居住。（Europe 没有“面”的含义）
They are living on the Continent．他们在欧洲大陆居住。（Continent则有“面”的含义）
The ball rolls through the grass in which it stands．这个球在草地上滚动。（草长得长）
The ball rolls across the grass on which it stands．这个球在草地上滚动。（草长得短）
The camera records the light on the skin，the artist the light in the soul．照相机只能拍摄人的皮肤表层，而画家却能刻画出人的内心世界。（两者不能对换）
1b．表达现状或活动，两者都可使用，但前者含有“持续”的义蕴，而后者则含有“暂时”的义蕴；换句话说，前者的反义词是out of，而后者的反义词则是off。
例如：in debt；in use；in action；etc．
out of debt；out of use；out of action；etc．
on duty；on one's legs；on one's guard；etc．
off duty；off one's legs；off one's guard；etc．
比较：Nowadays that country is deep in debt．如今那个国家负债累累。（长期现象）
Who is on duty today？今天是谁值班？（暂时活动）
1c．表达时间，两者也都可使用，但前者是指一段时间，而后者则是指特定时间。
比较：It happened in the evening．这是在晚上发生的。（指某一天晚上）
It happened（on）that evening．这是在那天晚上发生的。（不是在白天发生的）
Mrs Nash will come back in a day or two．纳希太太一两天就可打转。
Mrs Nash is usually at home on Sundays．纳希太太星期天常在家。
The little bird is on the tree.
