《当你老了》 是爱尔兰诗人 威廉·巴特勒·叶芝 于1893年创作的诗歌。作家冰心曾经为此首诗作译文。
1889年1月30日英语美文一分钟，二十三岁的叶芝第一次遇见了美丽的女演员茅德.冈英语美文一分钟，叶芝对于茅德.冈一见钟情英语美文一分钟，而且一往情深英语美文一分钟，茅德.冈一直对叶芝若即若离，茅德.冈最终拒绝了叶芝的追求，另嫁他人，叶芝对于茅德.冈爱情无望的痛苦和不幸，促使叶芝写下很多针对于茅德.冈的诗歌来，在数十年的时光里，从各种各样的角度，茅德.冈不断激发叶芝的创作灵感；有时是激情的爱恋，有时是绝望的怨恨，更多的时候是爱和恨之间复杂的张力。
从押韵上看 ,全诗的尾韵是最常见的单韵 , 且单节按抱韵体 abba, cddc, effe押韵 。 这样的押韵十分精致 ,表现出诗歌正式和庄重 , 甚至有点圣歌的韵味 。同时 , 元音 / ou / 在单 词 you, old, slowly, shadow, moments, soul ,s orrow s, glowing, overhead中的多次出现 , 几乎贯穿全诗 ,可以说是腹韵的典型使用 ( 除 shadows和 sorrows外 ) ,这几个词除了加强全诗的节奏 , 让全诗更加连贯 、 一气呵成以外 ,还因其发音的持续时间更长而营造出一种舒缓柔和的情绪 ,诗歌的浪漫抒情性由此体现 。 此外 , 头韵 / gr / 在单词grey, grace和 / gl / 在单词 glad, glowing中的使用 ,不但有助于表达作者沉重失落的心绪 ,还让年轻时和年老时的“ 你 ”形成鲜明的对比 ,产生强烈的冲突 ,增添了诗的凄凉性 。
全诗的主干动词均采用现在时态 ,而从属成分中均采用过去时态 ,尤其是最后一节中 murmu r 所引导的从属成分 ,就类似于小说中常见的一种自由直接引语 ( 省略引号 ) 。 它的使用既可以体现主人公意识的自由流动 , 使诗歌叙事的发展更加流利顺畅 , 增强了衔接的连贯性 。而两种时态的对比 , 也增添了“ 当你年老时 ” , 顿悟被诗人所爱的温暖 ,却无奈错过此真爱的凄凉晚景 。
