这首感人至极的歌其实是首圣诗，也有人翻成「美哉神迹」。西方歌手演唱此曲的版本很多，但茱蒂柯琳丝的版本采用无乐器伴奏的人声（accapella）表现，最能表达原曲圣洁祥和的慑人气氛，至今仍是不可取代的首选。
grace原意为"优雅、优美"，此处解释做"上帝对人类的慈悲、恩宠"。
这首「奇异恩典（Amazing Grace）」是一首大家耳熟能详的西洋歌曲，作曲者已不可考，据研究应与18世纪某些苏格兰的非宗教歌曲有关，早期它在美国黑人教会很流行，以致於常被认为是美国传统歌谣，或黑人灵歌，目前的乐谱由美国福音诗歌作曲家艾克沙（edwin O. Excell 1851-1921）改编。
这首众所皆知,令人感动且让人喜爱的诗歌,是由约翰牛顿牧师(John Newton,1725-1807)所作。
当牛顿二十三岁那年,有一次他搭船返回英国途中,突然遇到狂风暴雨,船几乎沈默,突然圣灵感动,想起了过去母亲的教导,突然彻底觉悟,跪下来认罪祷告,从此他成为新造的人。
后来他决心奉献给主,可惜因学历太低,而不被接纳,但牛顿并不灰心,发奋自修苦读并且勤研神学,经过十六年寒窗苦读之后,后来竟成为满腹经纶的学者,精通希腊文与拉丁文,三十九岁那年被按立为圣公会牧师。
他后来也成为一位大诗人,创作许多动听感人诗歌,甚至和当时一位伟大杰出的圣诗作家顾伯(William Cowper)成为莫逆之交,并合作出版了一本脍炙人口的奥尔尼圣诗集(Olney Hymns)。
这首"何等奇异恩典"正是他一生的写照,因此格外感人,旋律配上美国早期歌谣,别有一番韵味。

约翰牛顿曾经贩卖黑奴，无恶不作，后来反而沦落非洲。在一次暴风雨的海上，他蒙上帝的拯救，于是决心痛改前非，奉献一生，宣扬上帝的福音，成为19世纪伟大的传道人。去世之前，他为自己写了墓志铭：“约翰牛顿牧师，从前是个犯罪作恶不信上帝的人，曾在非洲作奴隶之仆。但借着主耶稣基督的丰盛怜悯，得蒙保守，与神和好，罪得赦免，并蒙指派宣传福音事工。”这首诗歌就是他一生得拯救的见证。
